Shooting Sticks preference?
Without initiating a poll, I'm curious who uses shooting sticks (or has) and what your preference might be? I'm thinking general walking with quit a bit of sitting and calling, as well as good for rat shooting over east. Must be sturdy, and I realy like the sticks that feature a long enough length to use like a walking stick of sorts.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I didnt use one until last years muzzleloader season and there is no way I could have made the 125 yard shot without it. It was a monopod that extended to shoot standing up I dont know the namebrand but it came from Joes and well worth the money.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I will never leave camp w/o sticks, period. They make you a better shotter if the situation warrants. When may 11 year old son made a kill shot on an elk at 220 yards 2 years ago that made a TRUE believer out of me. Does anyone what to take a guess on how many animals I have taken at 220 yards? I have two stick types at my house now and I am not sure if one is better.. They both are better than holding off hand which makes me believe any type of shotting sticks are better than nothing. I wish I was an hunting expert but I am not but not often does a new way of doing things excite me as the shotting sticks do...

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I have some Stoney Points. At first I just hated them. But when I went to Africa I was surpriesed to find the PH used the same brand and model. First day I got the crash course on how to use them. Would think of leaving home without them now.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I have to use one as I normally hunt with a pistol. I prefer a tripod set that I make myself out of wooden sticks. Simply tie three sticks together about six inches from one end and spread'um. Cheap, low technology that's been around for years. Works for me.

Stoney point all the way for me. Have shot several deer, an antelope, and probably 1,000 sage rats resting my rifles on them. Rock solid.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
For years I used Harris Bipods on my hunting rifles and after letting my nephew use my .25-06 I got it back with a composite stock that I am not too keen on (Plain ugly and too long for me. ) and no Bipods.
I have been looking into shooting sticks, probably a monopod. I loved the Bipods, but they were for prone shooting and you can't always flop down where you are and get a shot. Where I could use the bipods though I didn't miss, and felt very confident.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
Although I use the Stoney Point sticks, one of these years I'd like to try the Kramer Snipe Pod.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I have all three - a Harris bipod that fits on the rifle, a monopod long enough to let me stand, and the Stoney Point shooting sticks. My preference is the shooting sticks - by far.
Each leg is adjustable and they are solid, but the best part is if I have to swing on a critter the sticks will just fall away. I'm not fighting the weight or the brush with the legs as I swing.
I use 'em mainly for coyotes and rats, and they are an absolute mainstay in my shooting arsenal.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
Another vote for Stoney Point sticks. I always pack the kneeling/sitting height version for deer/elk. I am sure other brands work just as well. I just don't have any experience with them. I use self supported positions more, but I like to have the option of the sticks em when I need em.
For the big varmint guns I use Harris bi-pods. For walk around varmint shooting (.22/,17 stuff) a monopod works great.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
When I'm hunting western WA for blacktails I don't take my bipod with me generall because the shots are close and in the timber, but if I head east to more open country, I have a harris bipod that I throw on my gun.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I've never used them. Not being the coordinated type I figure that they are just one more thing for me to trip over and put my eye out.
My late father started using sticks the last several years he hunted, in his late 70's, and took several muleys from them.
Being the ...aahh...ummm..."frugal" person he was, he used two 1 X 1 garden stakes 5 feet long tied together with 6" of baling twine. He spray painted some green camo spots on them here and there. In the off season they held up some of his tomatos. After amortizing the use as garden stakes, he probably had a total shooting stick investment of about 26 cents. He loved 'em.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I had the stoney point shooting sticks fold up but lost them. So I bought the polecat bi pod sticks, much more stable. It has the telescoping legs. They work great for kneeling or sitting. I shot my colorado buck this year at about 200 yards with them. I also use them as a support for my binos when I am glassing very handy peice of equipment.

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I am off to Africa in April the last time I was there I used the ones the PH had that was two wood sticks lashed together with rawhide. Plan on buying some before I go this time.
BW which model did you use?

Re: Shooting Sticks preference?
I finally think I found what I was after. Pulled the trigger on some Stoney Point "Explorer" model sticks. They adjust from 25" to 62" I believe. I wanted to avoid a three section leg model, but I don't think you can get a sitting/kneeling/standing set of sticks without that? Anyways, I found mind on opticsplanet.com for a good price, plus free UPS. We'll see if they work for coyote huting this winter...

I am really impressed with the new SlingStiks, or however it is spelled. Starting to see a lot of them and I haven't heard anyone complaining about them.
