Buying a freezer
I need to buy a freezer since my freezer locker rental is shutting down and I would like others opinions on the best brand to buy. So far I am leaning toward an upright manual defrost by Wood's at about 20 cu ft. They are cheaper than Frigidare and probably about the same. I vacuum pack but still think the Manual defrost freezer is the best way to go.
So... what is the consensus?

Re: Buying a freezer
Uprights spill their cold air every time you open them. A simple chest freezer is the best and cheapest way to go.

Re: Buying a freezer
There are going to be some tradeoffs with either kind. Like Thumper said, the uprights lose a lot of cold air when opened, and will build up ice faster. But it's easier to find and retrieve items. They also have a smaller footprint. The chest type is more efficient since the air stays where it should when opened, but you may have to dig around to find that particular package. Do get a manual defrost though - no point in spending any more money on electricity than is necessary.
We've had both kinds, and liked them both. We're in the market for a small one (if I could catch more fish, then maybe we'd need a bigger one ).

Re: Buying a freezer
With all the fish available I have had the "no more space" problem. Recently purchased a used Gibson upright 21.3 cubic foot. It's a manaul freezer. I prefer the upright because it's easier to find things.

Re: Buying a freezer
sliderite, check out lowes, they are closeing out all their freezers making room for the new modles, just picked one up and got one heck of a deal it was one that was special ordered and they didn't even know they had it and wasn't their normal brand so they sold it dirt cheep, with the new energy saveing modles a up right recovers very quick after being opened just don"t like digging to get to the stuff on the bottom, dk

Re: Buying a freezer
Sliderite,
Gibson is the only way to go . My mother bought one back in 1970 and it hasn't had any problems whatsoever. I also like the convenience to locate things without having to bend over and reach for things. Please don't camp out on the last sentence. Re: Buying a freezer
I'd go with a up right over a chest any day.
Good luck,

Re: Buying a freezer
If you accidentally don't close the door all the way, an upright door stays open. Gravity will finish the job for you on a chest freezer.

Re: Buying a freezer
Snapset makes a excellent point, it is very easy to get a article in the door jam and then you will lose the stuff in the door and possibly the other items. If you got room and label and rotate items a chest is the way to go. If you are lazy then by all means go with the upright...We have three uprights. Re: Buying a freezer
Thanks for the input! I have learned that all freezers are made pretty much by two companies..Frigidare and Woods. Frigidare does make the Gibson and Kenmore brands.
I guess there are bad memories with our large chest freezer while I was growing up but that was mostly poor organization and I just remember the digging. Thanks again.

Re: Buying a freezer
Well.. I bought a 17'cuft upright manual defrost freezer from Sears today and I am at least releived that I will make the October 1st deadline for my freezer locker removal. It has a light, one adjustable shelf, a basket at the bottom, lock, and just so much room. It was a Kenmore of course since I got it at Sears. Thanks to all that posted. My eggs thank you.. all 15 quarts or so !!!!
Many of those were Amerman!

Re: Buying a freezer
Don't buy a freezer.....buy the wife a new refrigerator/freezer and put the old one out in the garage where you were going to put the freezer. The frig/freezer will add enough freezer space to hold enough salmon for the year(more is a waste) and now you got a lot of room for your beer and salmon eggs

Re: Buying a freezer
Sliderite: I work in Corvallis. Mind if I drop off some items on my way to work?
We still have some salmon in my brother-in-law's freezer at his car lot!
