Red face Yamaha 50hp 4 stroke won't start

I just purchased this Northriver with a 04' Yamaha 50 hp 4stroke on it. It won't start, it turns over, but the plugs weren't wet when I pulled one. I assume it is a fuel delivery issue, possibly old gas in the carb. Any suggestions or good shops that can get me going? Thanks

Start at the fuel tank side of the carb, pull off the fuel line and pump the inline squeeze ball to make sure you are getting fuel from the tank to the carb. If the answer is yes, start working through the carb. If the answer is no, start working the fuel system back towards the tank.

It could be something as simple as a pinched or cut fuel line, a little trouble isolation could save you some money.

Unscrew the bowl drain screw and make sure you have gas there and no water. Is it choking fully? If not it will be a bear, I know my honda I have to use the manual choke, the electric doesn't quite cut it.

New plugs?

If the coupling doesn't seal good on the gas hose it can suck air. They get old and stiff.

Fuel filters?

Do you have spark and compression.

Then look at the carbs, might need a teardown if cleaner dosn't do it.

If you don't already have a factory manual, buy it, it will pay for it self the first time you use it.

Do you have the deadman clip in place? if not you won't get spark, you know the little clip on a lanyard you wear so the boat stops when you fall out.

These are just a few of the things that come up every time I take my boat out. That and forgetting the beer and the bait and breaking the tip of the pole off in the car door.

A couple of months ago I was headed out in the bay for some King fishing. At the dock there was a guy that had the cowling off of his 115 Yamaha scratching his head!! "Motor won't start" he says.

I told him that Yamaha's always start so whats wrong? He says that he didn't know and he's been working on it for 1/2 hour or so.

"Do you have the deadmans clip on", I asked?

Oh ya, I forgot to put it on this morning. Geez I'm stupid he says.

So, it can something as simple as that.

Fuel, spark and compression and it should start.

Good luck,
