Default Green Peter

Fished Green Peter this morning. I only got one kokanee. I marked a lot of fish at 60 to 70 feet, but they weren't biting. And the one I did catch had absolutely no fight in it. It just let me reel it in. It didn't even flop around in the boat. I lost one that did the same thing. Which of course, makes me wonder why I lost it. Must not have hooked it solidly. Hmmmm. Makes me wonder. Maybe the water is warm? I saw two other boats out there, and they were getting skunked when I talked to them.

The fish I marked on the fish finder were all on the south and the west side of the island. I didn't find any in other parts of the lake.

This was my first fishing trip since July, and while it was a nice day out on the water, I really wanted to catch some fish. I sure hope this isn't the beginning of a big skunk streak. Maybe I'm just a bit rusty.

Hey HappyBrew, what was the water temp? Did you mark a continuous line at 60-70 feet? Is there any possibility that this was a thermocline and not fish? Good deal on the one you caught. It will taste good, fight or not.

Thanks for the report.

I really don't know what the water temp was down deep. It was around 70 near the top. Just a guess since I couldn't find my thermometer. No, it wasn't a thermocline. I was picking up individual fish at different parts of the lake. When I wasn't moving, the occasional fish would swim by at those depths as well. The trout(or bass?) were at 20-30, the kokanee deeper.

I'm thinking that with the lake as low as it is, it may be warmer. Low dissolved oxygen in the warmer water may account for the lack of fight in the fish. Just a guess. I have no way of being able to tell, and I'm not a biologist.

Happybrew,

Try Paulina in the fall next year. I was up there the past two weekends camping and fished a little. I only took home 10 fish, but they were all around 15 inches and put up a great fight. I had several that took line. One fish hit, popped the line from the downrigger release (50 feet) and was out of the water jumping before I could get my rod out of the holder. The fish are starting to get a hooked jaw and some color, but still tasted great on the BBQ.
