Re: Kevin and Niki!
Nice fish! ... Where do they allow keeping native cohos with the adipose fin intact? Just curious; I haven't heard where this is allowed. This place looks familiar in the pic.

Re: Kevin and Niki!
Yes, that appears to be a large adipose fin. They must have missed that one at the hatchery!

Re: Kevin and Niki!
The fish was taken just West of the Slip Point Bouy at Sekiu. Picture was taken at Olson's Resort.
Unclipped Coho can be retained in Marine Area 5 as of Sept 1. and we took our share!
This fish was the highlight of our most AWESOME vacation I mentioned in my report last night.
Caught on a blue and white Grand Slam Bucktail with herring oil 30 inches behind a light green glow-in-the-dark Hot Spot flasher at 20' trolling at 2.7 mph (GPS)
She also caught a 15, a 12 and a several 8-to10# fish.
We hooked and landed at least 10 fish per day for each of us and, of course, had many long-line releases.
We broke from our usual Hoochies and went with the Grand Slams with great success.
The Hoochies were working well, too, but we wanted to try something different and therefore stayed with what was working well at the time.
The bait used didn't seem to make much difference, we saw many fish taken on cut-plugs, spoons, any color flies, Hoochies and beaded lures. It was a fishing frenzy!

Re: Kevin and Niki!
Hey, RT, I told ya it was gonna be a blast. Too bad you couldn't make it.
Sekiu is just plain HOT for Coho right now as well as chums and pinks if you're inclined to keep them. We saw some fool bring a 25# King to the dock not knowing what he had. He was given a box and told to disappear quickly.
The Washington State saltwater record for Coho was probably broken on Friday with a 21+ Pound fish being weighed on a certified scale and the fisherman was waiting for a WDFW biologist to ID the fish.
There were MANY fish in the 18-to-20 pound range, clipped and unclipped.

Re: Kevin and Niki!
I fished there Saturday and Sunday and had similar experiences. I got 14.8 pound buck, hatchery silver, on Saturday and a 9.8 pound hen. Then on Sunday, Seacat joined me and all I caught were 5 little guys, but he got a 14.2 pound hen.
I saw that HAWG og a silver, the 21# fish, and it was huge.
Total fish this trip, 36. Total fish for the year at Sekiu, 280 brought to the boat. It was smoking hot.
I spent some time playing the egg ***** at the cleaning station and picked up 2 gallons of eggs. I guess I'll have to learn how to fish the rivers with bait.

Re: Kevin and Niki!
Here's another pic of one of our fish from Sekiu. My grandson, Alex, had his hands full trying to hang on to his rod and had to have a bit of help from "Nammie"

From the glint in that little guy's eye, you can tell he's not going to forget that day in a while!

Re: Kevin and Niki!
That's so cool that you have that nice young man to teach fishing and positive life adventures about at this early of age. Way to go Hoochie! ...
I thought that looked familiar in the top pic. Marty M. took me fishing for late summmer silvers out of Sekiu and we had a blast catching them. It's good to know they have enough natives to allow some harvest of them there. Great fish! But your area is so far for me to drive to and so many fish down our way I just stop at the NF or Cow or Bouy 10 these days. Sekiu is just great though!

Re: Kevin and Niki!
Here's what's relly cool about Sekiu:
Instead of going to Hawaii for our anniversary in December, Niki wants a BIGGER BOAT!
We fell in love with saltwater fishing and made three trips to Sekiu this year and decided the 17' Crestliner is just too small.
Not many things a gal can say to a man that'll excite us more than "Honey, let's get a new boat"
So maybe for her 50th in April, she gets a new Striper 2100 Walkaround. We've loloked at many boats and think this is the one for us.

Re: Kevin and Niki!
The kid's father hasn't even seen him, EVER!
He spends about 75% of his time with Nammie and Pop.
He's 4 today and I've had the privelege of teaching him to fish, drive the boat, run the downriggers and all that goes with teaching a young one to fish.
He talks about fishing all the time and he's already taken 4# rainbows, 2# bass and now the Coho in the pic here.
Paul Newman said having grandchildren is the chance to be a better grandparent than you were a parent. I feel blessed with this opportunity to do just that.

Re: Kevin and Niki!
Aunty M, If you're a woman and love to fish, then you can indeed be Niki's friend.
Tell us when and where we can find some good fishing in your area and we'll be there!
The rest of September is cooked, but we have October open for anything fishy.

Re: Kevin and Niki!
Gotta go back East to Princeton, N.J. for a wedding at the end of the month, but after that???????
Bubba, I'm game. I left some Coho out there for ya (just a few) and think the Chehalis just might kick out something even bigger than Niki's hawg.
Here's a challenge for you--- get her a bigger one than what we got at Sekiu.

Re: Kevin and Niki!
I will look forward to getting together with you Hootchie and Niki. We have an old 20 ft. Fiberform. Do you fish South Sound much? We are just learning the water down here. Most of our fishing has been up in the Straights or the Columbia.
Thanks for next weeks invite Jim, but we can't get away for about a month after this coming weekend. We're in the process of building a 32X60 garage and I am the lucky person who gets to deal face to face with inspectors and contractors.
We do get to hit the water saturday with nephew RJ, who plans on coming up from Newport to teach me a thing or two! Not sure where to go yet.
