Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
I got a floating line for my 8# and started looking into sink tips for it as well. Suddenly I got lost in a web of options. I saw some RIO multi tip stuff that was $159 bucks, ouch! I guess I need to go out and get some more experience first, see what the pros and the frugal use. Any suggestions or solutions for a sinking question?

Diy
spend $10 on a cheap WF8 floating line (used, eBay, whatever), cut off the front taper (6-10'), and install a braided loop there. Then buy a level 12' section of RIO T-8 to make a fast sinktip, and get another Type 3 or Type 6 tip as needed. You should be able to pull this off for $30.

Re: Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
I assume your 8# is a single hander? I dont use sink tips on my single hander but I believe the Rio Versatip system would probably meet your needs.

Re: Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
I use a Yancy line for the head and then I use a type 3 or 6 in 99% of all my applications. Every year there are a couple of days on the skagit or sauk (when they are running marginal on the high side) that I use a type 8.

Re: Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
I like the sinking leaders by RIO. I use floating line on everything. If I need to get down I add a RIO sinking leader. They come in diffrent sizes, and sink rates. I most often use a 5 ips, or 7 ips, but they also come in 3 ips. I generally use a 7' but they are also up to 15'. After attaching your sinking leader you can attach 2-4' of mono or florocarbon via loop to loop. I can change from using a floating line for grease lineing or skateing, to dredging the bottom in no time and don't need to carry a bunch of diffrent reels or spools.

Re: Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
I have a single handed 8#. I got a 8', loop to loop sink tip at 7" per sec. Put one of those braided loops on the end of my flyline and added the sink tip. I then put my leader on but now wonder if I really need a tapered leader or if I can just use 4 to 6 feet of 12 lb mono.

You don't need a tapered leader, level tippet is fine with a sink tip. You'll need to experiment with length as going too long with large flies and level tippet will make it difficult to turn over.

Re: Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
You want your sink tip and fly to be as close to on the same plain as possible, I uses 3-4ft, 4ft max, of either 12 or 15lb maxima, depending on water clarity.

Re: Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
I'm with SSpey on this one. Buy a cheap floater and cut off the front taper. Depending on the floater, you may need to cut off as much as 15'. Add a braided loop and buy some Rio T-8, T-11 and T-14 to make some heads. I've used both 12 and 15' heads using this method and both work well.
You can also put a braided loop on the other end of your head for quick and easy leader changes.
Good luck,
Brian

Re: Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
So is my brand new C444 peach, WF8 cheap or crappy line? Or should I look for an even cheeper line to cut the taper off?

The Jim Teeny T-Series shooting heads are awesome and cheap. The 6.5 ips is perfect with a 24ft sinktip..pretty sweet setup.

Re: Trying to figure out the sink tip combo
Now there's a great question..
The thing about using a fly line is that unless the water is perfectly clear
you really don't know where your fly is in relation to the bottom. It takes a lot of experience to learn how to read the water and match it with the right line whether it be a Teeny type Sink tip or a Rio multi tip.
I went the Teeny route and have most of his line including mini tips up to the chuck and duck. This takes a lot of different spools. Then there's the problems of adjusting your leader length and fly weight. Choosing a fly line before you learn to fish with the gear is tough. AndyK gave me advice about using Multi tips and for him it is a system that works. But he can't help me much with the gear I have and Jim Teeny isn't available.
It takes more then a few line types to match the conditions. When you figure it out let me know.... Of coure it might help a little if I got out and fished more....
