Angry Five Oregon City Men Cited...

Five Oregon City Men Cited for Wasting Canadian Geese (Photo)
Oregon State Police - 11/26/07
Five Oregon City-area men were cited this weekend for Wasting Canadian Geese while hunting in south Wasco County.

On November 24, 2007, an Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife trooper cited the five men for Waste of a Game Bird Canadian Geese. The men are identified as Philip Lee Hickman, age 24; Adam C. Pedracini, age 27; Dale R. Hickman, age 22; Reece A. Crone, age 22; and, Neil A. Fullington age 25.

Preliminary information indicated the five men had killed forty (40) geese over a weekend in south Wasco County. The men allegedly dumped eighteen geese in a canyon, including seven that had been "breasted out" and eleven dumped whole. The other geese were thrown away because they were "shot up", and the remaining twenty-two geese were cleaned and taken home.

The landowner discovered the geese and notified an Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Trooper out of The Dalles office. The trooper contacted a ranch owner in the Juniper Flats area and obtained information about people who had been hunting on his property over the previous weekend.

The trooper's investigation led to contact with one of the hunters who admitted to dumping the geese. The names of the four other hunters were provided and they all admitted to their involvement.

The Oregon Game Bird Regulations clearly state that the act of "breasting birds out" is illegal.

What a waste!!

Thank goodness this senseless act won't go unpunished. Perhaps they should tar and feather them with the same goose feathers they chose to waste.

This type of behavior makes me sick....it is like a pack mentality. Plain Stupid.....

I dont think you will find much simpathy here with this story. There was a poll two years ago that asked about breasting waterfowl and 87% of the respondants said they only breast out their ducks and geese. Although it is a very common practice it is illegal. I have taken much personal abuse on this forum pointing out that just breasting ducks and geese is illegal. Many well known and respected waterfowlers went so far as to defend this wasteful practice. One quote I recall is "whats the problem? it's just duck meat - its not buck meat".

Thanks for posting the story - maybe some on this forum who practice this wasteful means of disposal will take notice. Unfortunately, this will most likely only change how careful they are with getting rid of the evidence and not their wasteful practices.

What a waste!

I am simply responding to a thread that is directly related to the wasteful and illegal practice of breasting waterfowl - not preaching a message. Guys, pop those thighs & legs out and I'll pressure cook em down for shredded sandwich meat.
Seriously, toss em in a gallon bag and I'll come get em.

I agree EH...

When I hunted waterfowl with my dad years ago, he would have me pluck every feather off of each duck or goose we shot ( usually he shot, haha).

Trust me, there were times when I hoped our harvest was minimal, because I knew what was in store for me when we returned home. But what I learned was to not waste too much of what you took from nature, and that has always stuck with me and I will pass it on to my 4 kids.

As I have become older and wiser my choice has turned to upland birds, mainly because I enjoy it more and favor the meat. However, I totally respect the ardent waterfowl chasers...now they are dedicated...

My Dad would have been ****** beyond words if I did something like that and I hope my son understands when he is old enough that his father does not approve of this type of behavior either. I am not condoning their behavior and I could be wrong but I wonder if at least one of them was taught this was OK growing up. I go one step even further and save not just all the meat but the primary wing feathers as well. Goose fletching is a lot more water proof than regular turkey feathers. Goose feathers are worth their weight in gold to traditional bowhunters who hunt in the rain a lot. If you ever don't want to keep the primaries on any species of goose PM me and I will arrange a time to come get them from you.

Agree in full.
This is one of the three reasons I do not hunt waterfowl. I don't like to eat these birds.
My suggestion to those who waste game meat - stop hunting and take up another sport. Or as an alternative, find folks who will eat it and give them ALL the meat.

The citations were only partially for breasting. More birds were simply tossed.

Agreeing with Bill, we are losing the "Big Picture" here. Multiple geese were simply tossed. I thought I read earlier that one or more of these individuals were involved in a similar situation in O.C. a year or two ago. If there is any truth to this, I would hope the prosecuter for this current crime is made aware of it.

I dont waterfowl hunt very much, but what we do get we definitely eat. Last year I took the duck meat that I had and ground in with the venison from a doe that I tagged during the Willamette season. I dont care for duck steaks, but there are penty of other ways to process game so it doesnt go to waste. Duck and goose meat mixed with wild boar makes excellent pepper sticks too.

Too many guys enjoy the hunting aspect of things and then when its time to get to work, they realize just how much work lays before them. I am sure some of the birds they tossed were salvagable and they were looking for an excuse to toss them - no doubt a shame none the less.

Since I hunt Juniper Flat I'd be very interested in exactly where this happened and on whose land. Were these guys trespassing or what?

One of the five was involved in the dumping of all the breasted carcass' several years ago in the PDX area. That makes it twice in four years for him. Zeke, whose places do you hunt on on Juniper Flat?

When I was in high school I heard several stories of this group doing some illegal things out in the woods. You would hope they would grow out of it....apparently not.

ONE OF THESE GUYS IS ONE OF THE GUYS WHO DID IT BACK IN 2004!!!!!

They should loose hunting privledges for life. They probably do it often and only get caught every few years.

The guys from 2004 are, Eddie Briggs, 32; Byron Zirkle, 28;Adam Pedracini, 27; Kyle Sayre, 24; Bret Sayre, 20,
http://64.94.113.71/news/story.asp?id=64379

The guys from 2007 are: The men are identified as Philip Lee Hickman, age 24; Adam C. Pedracini, age 30; Dale R. Hickman, age 22; Reece A. Crone, age 22; and, Neil A. Fullington age 25. Wierd that they have the same age in both stories.

It amazes me just how stupid people are. They get caught once, and then continue to do it. Get a clue!

Another reason it is hard to get access on private land. Thanks for coming over here and making a local rancher angry.
