Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
So does any one have any traditions?
Growing up back east it was a morning of whitetail hunting with family. Now that I live so far away it is a morning of duck hunting with a few close friends.
Then eat turkey till I hurt!!!!

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
A tradition that I enjoyed as a youth, this was years ago, was our family driving over to grandma's house where my Dad and I met up with my cousins for a good old fashion pheasant hunt. I can still remember walking along the endless barbed wire fences and rail roads looking for Mr. Rooster. If we were successful we would have freshly fried pheasant for hors' deurves before the big meal.
Of course grandma has passed and our families are all over the place now. However, the memories still remain with me to this day.

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
I usually hunt up a turkey sandwich with extra cranberry sometime around 11:00pm followed by a slice of pecan and/or pumpkin pie and a cold glass of milk!

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
Well, it used to be a tradition - until I got divorced that is.
My ex-wifes aunt & uncle live up in Colville, Wa and own a bunch of property in the valley there. Anyway, I'm really not much of a bird hunter but each turkey day we would hunt ducks and geese in the morning until about noon and then eat the rest of the day. Never had such of a good time as when we would stand in some swamp or field and have birds all around us. Her uncle George got real excited when the geese would come in. Wish I could have kept the aunt & uncle and just gotten rid of the ex!!

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
My dad and I go out duck hunting every thanksgiving morning and sometimes all day. Our family typically has thanksgiving saturday which is typically one of the busiest huntings days of the year with entire families hunting so i think we got the sweet end of the deal...

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
While my brother-in-law was alive we would sneak out for a morning pheasant hunt...then I managed to work in an am rabbit hunt with the beagles for a few years. Up until a couple years ago...didn't make it back to dinner until after the turkey was served. Haven't been out since.:frown:
This year we are visiting my sons' family in Davenport, Wa and are planning to get out for some birds, hopefully.

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
I'm hoping to start a new one on Thursday morning. It's called killing a big buck. That would be a great tradition to have every year!

I grew up in Maryland. My two uncles, father, two brothers and I would spend a couple of hours in the morning hunting pheasant and rabbits.

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
A morning duck hunt was a tradition for a long time. Now it's hit and miss with the families growing and getting busier this time of year. Still go when we get the chance to slip out for the morning.

I'm taking my step son Robert out for a hunt Thanksgiving morning, so he can try and bag a Blacktail with his bow.

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
It was customary in my family to deer hunt on Thanksgiving day.
I don't share that level of commitment, the day for me is about family.
However, I will sneak down to some little slough to blast a few ducks before everybody wakes up, since technically the day hasn't started at legal shooting time for most people in my hours.

Not a tradition but, that's where I'll be. Probably in a slough, so I don't have to take the extra time to prep the boat and launching etc.
Oh man, I do not want to be late for that dinner.
"Wouldn't be prudent ...not at this juncture" like Mr. Bush would say.
The dinner is at the inlaws' so I'll take my brother inlaw for insurance. If we're late, it'll be all his fault.

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
Duck hunting or steelhead fishing??????????
Seeing as how the last Thanksgiving I had off I went fishing, so this time I guess I'll try and shoot some quackers.

In Oregon, a quick morning duck hunt has been the rule.
In Idaho, it depended upon whether our pond was frozen over, if so, we'd get geese on the Teton river, or try to fill an elk/deer tag. Otherwise, it was a morning half-day at Targhee!
Tomorrow, I will be hunting ducks and pheasants on the Snake river before the turkey gets consumed. I think I will want to repeat this one.

Re: Thanksgiving Hunt Traditions
On years we draw doe tags that what we chase. On other years it's duck's and geese. Occasionally it's a cow elk hunt if the lottery draw is good. No matter what something gets shot !!!!!!!!!

Well I am going steelhead fishing for the first time in 5 months tomorow. If I catch a fish, I just might have a new tradition.

I usually try to get out and kill something. Late season blacktail, ducks, this year it is quail and maybe an unlucky cow.

My son and I have been doing a rooster hunt for about the last 8 years now the son-in-law and grandsons have joined in the last three years. I hope we can keep it going till all the grandsons are old enough too join in.
We bagged 5 roosters this year.
