Sushi joints
I just stumbled on a new sushi joint on Hwy 99 in Vancouver, and I'm impressed. Its called Sushi Tsunami, at about 74th and NE Hwy 99. My favorite places are the spot in Sellwood on Bybee, a Marineopolis near my house in Clackamas, and Todai.
What are your favorite sushi joints? There's another good place off of NW 23rd too.

Re: Sushi joints
Are you talking about the sushi/tepanyaki place? That is Oh's Osaka (awesome sushi there!!!), or there is the one in the strip mall that has the boats that go around in the water, i think that is called Gen Kai.

Re: Sushi joints
It amazes me at how "Pilar" is consistently "right on" with his recommendations and good taste. The place in Hillsboro is a great place but for those that do not want to travel so far, here are a few more places to eat bait.
East side, there is a place behind Trader Joes in the Hollywood district. The place on SE Bybee is also great but I do not like to wait so long.
West side close in - try the place next to Uwajimaya or their previous location across the street from the Fred Meyer on canyon road.
Sorry about the lack of names. I must be a visual guy as I can recall the location and the great food ;-)
BTW - John, you once enlightened me to cooking tuna the right way and I have been hooked since. A big thanks.

Re: Sushi joints
The best place for Sushi bar non is Saburu's in SE portland off Bybee bvld. There's a reason why the line is soo long to get a table. Portions can be 2x what you would normally find at a sushi joint.I've eaten at joints all over Cali, and Hawaii, nothing comes close to saburu's.Otherwise there's freshly prepared tuna that you can eat withn a hour of it being killed. That's only if your fortunate enough to get one of those fatty cow's down south. How about a steak of YFT meat that's only a hour old, eat it like a burger..Doesn't get all that much better.

Re: Sushi joints
Barviewrocks .. you are welcome and thanks for the kind words.
Here's one more .. Takahashi in SE Portland. 103rd and Holgate. Seiji is the sushi master. Sit at the bar and talk to him, he'll tell you a joke or show you how to make your favorite. The one in old town has good food too but I like the original out in SE with the train that circles the place around the walls.
Escolar was his recommendation and I order it whenever it is available. They also make tempura and traditional Japanese. Nabiyaki or homemade noodle is another good thing. A bowl of noodles, vegetables, meat, various pickled japanese stuff and broth. Yum.
Any good sushi in Corvallis? No one I've talked to here even likes the stuff.

Re: Sushi joints
Is this the same Escolar? I guess its good if you watch your intake
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escolar
The only good, and i think only period, sushi place in corvallis is downtown on 3rd street next to Cantina, pretty good but spendy
Aomatsu Japanese Restaurant
122 NW 3rd St
Corvallis, OR 97330
If you travel a lot for business in Oregon here is a website that lists every place in oregon that either has sushi or might have it, as well as a review. kind of dated call first if you are trying out a new place:

Re: Sushi joints
I'm one to talk because I love sushi and fishing for tuna.
The most popular item at the sushi shops is Maguro. (Bluefin Tuna)
I just returned from a business trip to Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the stuff is everywhere. Now with the added markets in the U.S. and Europe, I can't help to wonder how long this fishery will last. It's always in the back of my mine. Like I said, I'm one to talk cause I love catching bluefin and better yet even eating it raw.

Re: Sushi joints
I like Takahashi for their great deals on Saturdays, however the quality of their rice isn't the best. I've been there numerous times when the rice is cold and not cooked all the way.
Since I'm on a fairly tight budget, I stick to the sushi joints with the trains or conveyor belts. For the price, I don't think you can beat any of the Marinepolis (aka: Sushi Land) around the area. Love the fried calamari with a side of spicy sauce and the asparagus roll, damn tasty for only $1.50

Re: Sushi joints
The spot in Sellwood is Saburos. It is the best in town. Their surf clams are like twice the size of any surf clams you will find at any other sushi joint. The line does suck but for me it is worth the wait.

Re: Sushi joints
Heh. Wife and I had dinner at Syun's on Saturday. No reservation, so it took about 20 minutes to be seated. Chef was busy, so they plied us with stuffs until the food was ready. 6 rolls and 2 nigiri later we were full up. $55 plus tip, so not the cheapest, but damn good food.
And yes Bob, they serve cooked food as well.
For another place to try, on Thurman in NW between 23rd and 24th across from the Food Front. Never a wait, and good food. Just not convenient when I could be spending that gas money on sushi at Syun instead.

Re: Sushi joints
Koji Osakaya in Gresham took a measurable bite out of my annual income this year. Of course, I probably should have known I had a problem when they quit asking what I wanted to drink, started slicing unagi when I walked through the door, and began sending a dish of extra Tobiko with my orders.

Re: Sushi joints
LOL .... nobody likes sushi here.
I haven't been to Takahashi on Holgate for almost a year.
Benihana's is pretty spendy at dinner. The best deal there is handrolls at lunch. I'm thinking of the one off 217 in Tigard. What do they offer at happy hour?
$1.25 handrolls at lunch. That includes all of em, even the spider handroll.
Marinepolis is where I first had sushi. You can see the stuff and decide on looks what to eat. This is very important for beginners. And the squid rocks. I wait till they are all gone and then order two. They have to go and make them and they are hot and very good. The Marinepolis on Canyon in Beaverton has a few items not on the menu.
Rickie's special .. handroll with shrimp, avocado, draped over with salmon and maguro and spicy sauce.
Bonito .. seared and covered with green onion and ginger. In season. I always ask.
Seared sockeye and seared Atlantic Salmon.
Seared albacore.
Does anyone here admit to eating Uni? Uuuuckkkk. I've tried several times but ugggghhh.

Only 2 places here but both are good Sada's on the Bayfront. He does some amazing stuff with local catches in season. Yuzen in Seal Rock look for the 15' japanese guy that looks like Steve O. Yuzen is great but not if you are in a hurry.

The new place is a few blocks south of Aomatsu on 3rd I believe. As long as I'm here, I might as well sound off for Ginza in Albany. I've eaten my share of sushi and they are up there with anyone.
An interesting side note...I was talking to the sushi chef at Ginza recently about how sushi restaurants buy fish. He told me that the only distribution house in the whole area is in Vancouver, WA. Soooo..... most of the sushi joints being discussed on here get their fish from the same place I'm sure there are different grades that can be purchased which would vary the quality, and handling is certain to affect the quality.....but, i fiigured I'd throw that in there.

Another vote for Sushi Land, and other places with conveyor belts, when you're in a hurry. Where else can you start eating within seconds after sitting down.
In Corvallis, the new place is:
Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar 250 SW Third St. (3rd & Jefferson)
Corvallis, OR 97333
phone: 541.754.7508
fax: 541.752.1930
Type: Japanese
Features: Hibachi Style - We cook in front of you! Dine In, Carry Out & Catering - Exotic Cocktails

Re: Sushi joints
Pilar,
Aomatsu is good and pretty reasonable. I haven't been to Tokyo, it's fairly new. I've been told it's pricey and not as good. It is surprising that Sushi's not more popular around Corvallis.
Aomatsu is across from the Wells Fargo Bank on 3rd street and Tokyo is a few blocks to the south, both are on the west side of 3rd.

Sushitown in Tanasborne when you wanna go cheaper.....very good here
Portland City Grill is also awesome for upscale.......
Hakatamon is also good.....inside Uwajamaya in Beaverton
Hard to beat Todai also.......
But my favorite is right in my own home......something about making yourself, your own way, treating friends, that just makes it better

My 6 year old LOVES that shshi place on NW 23rd with the conveyor. She always asks to go there and get the shrimp sushi, tuna rolls and all kinds of stuff and usally leaves just the rice for me .... BUT I think it really is because of the choclate cream puffs

Re: Sushi joints
Saburos is FABULOUS! I just tried a new one called Leihana at the base of the sky tram to OHSU. It was very good at Happy hour, with prices much like Saburo's and portions that were average. Their service was good (and good looking!) My 7 year old was diggin' his first Sushi Bar experience.

Oishi Sushi (sounds like "ohshit sushi" only without the "t") in vancouver by the Oliver Garden at the Vancouver Mall. Great sushi and sashimi. They also serve tuna and halibut collars which are fab! Just ask for it. Prices are reasonable as well.

Re: Sushi joints
I tried the Tokyo grill just south of Amotsu last week and thought it was good. I could not tell any difference between it and Amotsu and the steak dish I ordered for lunch was great. Only $9.95 for the steak and the sushi was reasonable. They also have the "tables around the grill" style seating which can be kinda fun at times.

This is where my wife (Japanese) usually takes me. We've tried many of the others but she hasn't been impressed. She only likes the authentic Japanese, I like it all!
Our less expensive go-to sushi is at the Hakatamon Restaurant at Uwajimaya in Beaverton. Authentic sushi and the kids love the udon, all at a reasonable price. Food is good, but you are eating at a grocery store!
