Question starting proplems first start--98 evinrude 115

Looking for info on why my motor is so hard to start for the first time of every trip. often it floods before i can get it started. Once fired up for the first time it runs great and starts easy. 98 evinrude 115 optical ignition.

Any ideas?

I know this sounds wierd but... Is your electric choke malfunctioning or are you forgetting to choke it ?

I have a '96 Johnson 88 hp, which I believe is essentially the same engine. I had terrible problems with cold-starting, until learned the secret from one of the boating boards. Here is the sequence that works very well.

* Pump up the bulb until hard
* Lift the fast-idle lever at least 1/2 way
* Push the key in, and hold it for a slow count to 8. This shoots a squirt of gas into the carbs. The engine has a primer, not a choke.
* Turn the key. It should start, but will immediately falter. If it does, push the key in again for a moment. Do this as many times as required.
* Push the idle speed lever down if it overspeeds

Best of luck.

I am sorry for all that have replied that I have not been here for a few days. As for all the replies, I have absolutly no problem getting fule to the carbs. I usually flood the enginge before I can get it started for the firts time of any fishing day. Someone once suggested using starting fluid. I tried that, and it worked, started right up, but I am not a fan of that method. It just confirms to me that there is some other sort of a problem. I suppose I will simply have to just take it to a mechanic and see what happens.

Thankyou all and have a great day.

Spark plugs maybe? It's a lot harder to fire cold gas/oil mix than when it's warm and vaporizes better.

Take it to Sportsman Marine in Salem. They are Evinrude experts and very good people to do business with!
