My first river caught coho
I've only caught them in saltwater before. Exciting. There is supposed to be so many more coming in the next few weeks. I talked my friend Marla into casting spinners from a few spots on the Clackamas River this weekend. We only got two fish on both in the same hole. I was the lucky one hooking the fish and landed one about 7 to 9 pounds. Really a lot of fun and a lot like steelheading. I have been reading lots of informative fishing posts about fishing for cohos in the rivers here. Thank you guys. I am trying to get some of my girlfriends to join this discussion board so we'll see if they will. Julie

Re: My first river caught coho
I hope asking for a picture of my fish doesn't mean you don't believe me you guys! Girls do catch fish too. As for you Mr. Bigstew you have asked me before to post my picture. Why? It shouldn't matter that I am goodlooking? Are you married? I like to have fish and to have fun just like you guys. So what? The spinner I landed the one fish on was a Blue Streak by Wordens. It had a silver blade and blue body and costs less than those Blue Fox spinners. I had one on it for just a few seconds before I hooked and landed my coho a few minutes later. I just casted out and let it sink for a couple of seconds and then reeled in slowly. No other hits for us though. Goodnight guys. Julie

Re: My first river caught coho
Good job Julie. Blue and silver is a good choice for spinners. Steelhead like those colors too.

Re: My first river caught coho
This is RT at Stew's - picking up a load of smoked salmon; and it's great! (Ryan, this really is Steve, only you and Troy would know I used a Wart with a half inch of pink worm on the bead chain in front of the treble). This is a very interesting situation here Julie. These guys are getting a little sexist here, don't you think? If they were really honest, I bet they would think that women can't catch fish as well as men. But you sent me a pic of you with a nice fish you caught. I will post it here if you want me to. Otherwise these hounds can wait until you come to an ifish function - the next one this Sat. at Jen and Bill's ifishstock event (read other posts about it). ...
As for "Mr. BIGSTEW" here, I think you put him and these other boys in their place just nicely Julie. As they say, 'You go girl!'. Take care. - Steve

Re: My first river caught coho
Great Job Julie A picture is not a bad thing to ask, how would I know who you are if I was fishing near you. It's nice to see someone familiar, especially ifishers. The gender thing needs to be put out the window and let's all be pals to each other. Isn't that why we are all here reading this stuff !! Re: My first river caught coho
way to go on the fish.silvers are a great fish all around.if you like the clack then try the sandy also.the nice thing about the sandy is you get a shot at nooks also.you can use the same tactics that you would on the clack.try at lewis and clark park in troutdale neer the train tressel.good to see the chickaroos out there we need diversity to secure the future of this sport

Re: My first river caught coho
Hey BC, "chickaroos" and from Broadachers? It's obvious you are quite the lady's man! I haven't kept up with the lastest politically correct terminology for women or girls. Geez, I've been using 'skirts' or 'kitchen rats', or even just 'babes' sometimes, when I address them girlie creatures. No wonder they give me a cold look. Now I will use chickaroos. That should help, eh? Thanks man. ...
That was me posting from Stew's tonight when I went to pick up a load of my salmon he smoked for me. It's gooooooooood Stew! Thanks. I am eating my third piece right now. I better stop before my lips look like the rim of a margarita glass. ...

Re: My first river caught coho
hey julie,
why so defensive about posting your pic? i think the guys (and maybe the gals too) would like to see what a woman who fishes well looks like. i, for one, would like to know what you look like so i can stand next to you on the bank - maybe some of that skill and good luck will rub off on me.
so how about a picture posting thread? i've probably fished next to a good number of the folks on the board and didn't even know it. here's some pics of me that actually look like me these days. http://www.xprt.net/~ampersat/hair/

Re: My first river caught coho
Julie- way to go! Great feeling landing a first fish. Funny thing about women on the river usually more sensible. I fished the NF Lewis the other day while RT, Ramstrong and Troy drifted and I saw six women there. When I first got there a fisherwoman was pulling in a wild Steelhead, when was told she had to put it back she did not swear. Another later landed a 12 lb Steelie and shortly after hooked a wild she released. She sort of put on a clinic of her own to us fishless guys me included. Couple of other women fishing togather in the combat zone of the meathole got coho. Another while fishing teaching rig setups to kids that were trying but not getting help from their fathers. The funniest comment I overheard while leaving,a husband that was not fishing with kids watching as well, husband said to the wife "we gotta go there will be more fish you can next time". I did see guys fair hook fish and others snag say oh yeah it is in the jaw then wrap the line in its mouth slugging, kicking and slamming the fish. I haven't seen a woman do that yet. I am not pro feminist I am for doing the sensible thing, the equality thing and if I am not catching fish being the lurker I enjoy watching anyone catch a fish.
So Julie sorry I got off a little here. Did you do a victory dance, shout, scream or all the above. Congats again.

The only difference between a male and female angler is in the fit of the waders...most of the time, at least.
