Default WHAT IS YOUR WORST FISH HOOK ENCOUNTER????

after reading about the guy with the hook in the eye, i thought i'd start a new topic, what is the worst fish hook, swivel slap, rod breakin, lead flyin, flyline whiplash.... that you've ever had?
have to say mine is a fish hook that was stuck in my forehead, and was too dark to see what i was doing to remove it, had to wait till i got home to remove it. so let's hear about the worst ones you've ever had

thankfully, this isn't a fishhook story, but it's almost as bad.

i was drift fishing the first hole where eagle creek and the clackamas come completely together. any of you who have fished it in the last year and a half know there's a partially submerged tree right in the head of the hole. it's a real tackle snatcher.

well, i had cast just a little too far and my line looped over one of the springy, exposed branches. it looked like it had whipped around the branch and i would just have to break it off. so i yanked really hard and - lo and behold - here's my gear, corkie, yarn and pencil lead, airborn. it flies all the way across the river to smack me in the groin.

as if that weren't bad enough, about thirty minutes later, i had a silver foul hooked and worked it up into the shallows to be released. that's when the fin gave, rig came flying out of the water and hit me where? all together now: the groin

i gave up after that. enough pain and humiliation for one day. i tell ya', neoprenes just don't protect against that as well as you might hope.

The worst fish hook encounter would have to be all the times the tackle store that's open before I fish, would be out of a particular size I needed because someone seems to forget the leader box.

Last summer when going to remove the trebles out of pound or so bass, he tossed the hooks beautifully into my thumb, behind the nail.

Keep in mind that this fish is still attached to the lure. That was the worst pain, besides knee surgery rehab and zipping the zipper up on the General, that I've ever felt. I had to kill the fish to stop his flailing as it had brought me to my knees.

After the fish stopped flopping, I then unscrewed the hook from the lure and tried to remove the hook myself. The barb was position right behind the nail and there was nothing I could do, but haul *** to the nearest hospital only 18 miles away ( ) only to get caught behind a funeral procession. I spotted one of the officers and told of my dilemna, and was police-escorted to the emergency room, around the train of cars.

A big shot of novacaine to the thumb, a pair of wire cutters, and 10 seconds is all it took. All in all, I'd have to say women in labor is way overrated when you have a big barbed hooked embedded right behind the nail, and attached is a flopping bass digging the hook deeper.

My brother Justin hooked himself in the butt once. Actually it was in his lower back about 4" away from his butt, but we still hassle him that it was his butt.

Last summer down at Winchester Bay I went to release a silver while it was still in the water and w/out a net. Got one hook out (the other still in its lip) about that time it took off like a seal was after it... unfortunately the loose hook barried through my thumb nail stopping only for the bone beneath it.

It seemed like an eternity that i played that fish w/ my thumb before we could pull the hook out... Thank goodness it was barbless!

they say that fish cant feel hooks , i sure as hell hope not or i might feel bad after feeling first hand (no pun intended) what its like.

Mine also came bass fishing. I was pitching a 1oz. Jig-N-Pig into deep heavy wood in the mult. Channel last summer. I hung the jig up on a limb a foot above the water. I tried pulling the jig free and that didn't work so, I really ripped on it and it came flying back at mach 3 and whacked me right between the eyes. I dropped to my knees instantly. I was seeing stars. Luckily the hook point didn't penetrate me forehead. Man, I had a bell-ringer headache and a bruise between my eyes for a couple of days.

It's a toss up. There's the time when I was fly casting a bass bug and my dog ran through the line, firmly setting the hook in the bone of my index finger. I couldn't get it out and had to go to the emergency room where they enjoyed the fact that I was President of the Anglers' Club of Portland.

Then there was the time I was lecturing about fly fishing Oregon's high lakes to a group of about 80 Explorer Scouts. At the begining of my talk I was standing in the front of the auditorium, introducing my self, waving my fly rod around when the fly came off the hook keeper and openned up a vein in the side of my ring finger. I was squirting blood all over myself in front of 80 Boy Scouts .... trying to look like I knew what I was talking about. The two hour talk seemed to last far longer than that.

Fishing a two-fly rig for bull trout on the Metolius (#10 nymph and #4 bunny leech), I hooked and landed a 5lb bull. Not realizing that the second fly was stuck to the fish as well, I pulled the fly he took out of his jaw, tailed him, revived him, and still attached to my second fly he swam away, sinking the other fly deep into the back of my thumb. He felt resistance, swam harder, hurt more. Revenge I called it. Nice fish though...

Was rigging up my pole once a few years ago and I left my gear out in the backyard for a few minutes while I went inside to go to the bathroom. When I walked back outside, my cat was running around outside with the fishing rod trailing behind him and a treble hook on a spinner dangling from his mouth! Took him to the vet and had it removed-no blood. Why would a cat bite a lure??

A few years ago I arrived at the river while it was still dark and tied a jig on my line and I decided to bite the tag end of my line off which I never do instead of clipping it off.Well when I bit the line I impaled the hook all the way through my lip and my hook was so sharp I didn't even feel it go in I just felt some weight on my lip.The hook went all the way through my lip and the barb was sticking out.I was by myself at the time so I had the bright idea of trying to work it back through my lip,bad idea.I finally gave up and decided to start fishing with the jig still stuck in my lip.

A friend of mine showed up and just about fell over laughing when he saw me.Several other people I knew saw me with the jig stuck in my lip also and got a good laugh out of it.Finally after fishing for a while I decided to try to get the hook out myself but that didn't work.I talked my friend into helping me so we clipped the barb of and then my friend grabbed the jig with pliers with one hand and put his other hand on my head and yanked it out quickly. At least I was spared the embarrassment of going to the doctor.

The rest of the summer I heard about this embarrassing incident quite often although it wasn't quite as funny to me.I can remember them saying Joe not only makes his own jigs but he eats them too.

So how was that cat on a rod a bad thing? I don't think that your cat has anything on the Canada goose I caught. The cat's travel was only 2D, that goose went 3D.

Growing up we had a dog named "Mepsy." I think the name says it all.

Lets see a couple of years ago while fishing the North Santiam, I was pulling a K-14 in and it broke water (like they sometimes do). First think in the morning after we have already boated one very nice springer here comes two sets of treble hooks flying at my face. Well I did what most will do and put my hand up. Two of the Barbs went deep into the muscle between my index finger and thumb. My dad (who would have never stopped fishing in my youth)said well gotta go get those things out. I started to get the pliers out and he said "hey man what the heck are you going to do with those" I told him and he turned white. "We need to get you to a doctor so he can get them out" I asked him "Dad what are they going to do?" "Well they will numb it up and pull them out" he said. "Well we are only missing the numbing but if we leave we will be missing the fishing and right now the day is looking pretty good" "Now are you gonna pull these out or am I gonna have to?" Well he wouldnt so I tried myself. (You know it is amazing how strong human flesh is)It didnt work so I asked him to please hold the pliers for me for a moment and when he grabbed them I pulled with all I was worth in a short quick blast. He quickly said "now that wasnt as bad is it looked was it?" Well we ended up with two more beautiful springers in the boat and had a great father son day.

I was on the Alsea o one of those morning that would freeze the kahonies of a brass monkey. Every other cast I had to pop the ice out of my guides, It was that cold. I hooked a small steelhed and decided I was going to release it if I landed it. As I was trying to land it, It wrapped its self up in the leader. I Pulled the hook out of its mouth and tried to free it from the leader. I thought I got it totally unwrapped, I didnt. There was still one wrap aroung the fish. As I released the fish it pulled the leader across my han and buried a #1 gammi past the bard in my index finger right above the first knuckle. The fish started thrashing and with every thrash, It buried the hook even deeper. The 8lb maxima leader finally broke. My hands were already throbbng from being cold, With the hook in my finger it was almost unbearable. I was by myself and I had to get the hook out. So Igrabbed with my pliers and yanked hard. All I can say is OUCH!!! and some words tat are not allowed on this BB. Needless to say that put the end to my day.
Then there was time I was throwing a deep water express shooting. I had on a size 2 bunny leach. I messed up a cast and the fly nailed my in the shoulder blade and went in past the barb. It felt like someone shot me. I had my partner rip the fly out with some pliers. I bled like a stuck hog and had a nice bruise for a few days.

i fell down in my sled a few years back and buried both trebles(no.2)off a mag wart in my knee in such a way that when i tried to straighten my leg it stretched the trebs apart sinking them deeper into my knee,i had to cut the trebs from the wart and head to the doc,he proceeded to cut my new pants off me to get at the hooks.ended up with a couple stitches and a big dr.bill my buddy loved it! scott

I was helping on a commercial Salmon troll boat about 15 years ago when my captain ran his hand up into a pulley with a "crabcutter" A crabcutter is esentially a pair of scissors bolted open, designed to cut crab pot ropes that become entangled with downrigger system. The crabcutter is placed inches above the downrigger ball and are very sharp. It actually cut a couple of inches into the palm of his hand, through tendons and nerves and muscle. Very gross.

That day I learned that I am not squemish around lots of blood.

A couple of years ago a bunch of us went out sturgeon fishing, we happened to go by one of the ships anchored out in the river and noticed they had some lines hanging from one of the rails, so of course the dummys we were , we got pretty close and noticed they had a ton of flies on it, so one of the"drunk guys" on the boat grabbed it,well in the meantime the guy driving the boat was not paying attention to the huge fly that was stuck in his buddys hand, about the time he figured out what was going on, the 15 to20# test busted off the rail and we had a guy screaming like a girl!!!! It ended up taking two guys and a pair of needle nose to get that huge hook out, good thing someone didnt get one in the eye!!!!!!!!!

i had a k16 hanging on anail next to a extension cord in the garage.one day i needed the extension cord when i grabbed the cord and started to walk away the k16 caught me in the side of the finger and buried the barb past the flesh to the point where the point of the treble hook was barely sticking out the end of my finger.when i came walking in the house with that big lure hanging off my finger my wife just couldnt figure out what to say.well i took charge and told her to pull out the hard liqour and a pair of pliers.after 1 hour of drinking and pulling my wife got sick and demanded i go to the doctor.i did and was surprised when the doctor clipped the hook alittle before entry and pushed the remainder of the hook through how simple why didnt i think of that?

Years ago, my brother was removing the mooching rig from a Silver on the floor of the boat. One of the hooks became imbedded in his finger while the other hook was still in the fish. While the fish struggled the hook kept going in deeper. His fingers literally punctured the fish while trying to hold it still. After the fish stopped struggling we snipped off the leader and he had a well set hook in his index finger. It just so happened that some time earlier there was an article written about in the field hook removal. It may have been in STS or H and F news, but there were drawings on how to do it. We used a piece of fishing line run through the inside of the hook curve, you pull the hook firmly towards the spot where the hook comes out of the skin (this gives the barb some relief), then you rotate the hook out at the same time.
Well one minute my brother is talking about going to the hospital and ending the fishing trip and the next he is tellin' us to get the lines in the water. Worked real slick.

o.k so far i have to give props to the jig in the lip, thats pretty good. but here is my best one. now this didn't happen to me it happened to my Dad. He was fishing a local river, and had to take a little tinkle, he looked around, no one was there, so he opened up and let fly right into the river, you know put your rod under your arm and just go, well he was about half way done, and he started hearing voices comming down the trail, and even worse it sounded like women! well, he was quick to finish his duty and zip up. He then proceded to prepare to cast and that is when he felt the intense pain down below! yes, that's right he zipped up his corky and egg hook up in his pants and hooked right into the old captians mast. I'll leave the rest to your imagination, he did get the hook out and didn't have to go to the doctor but, he walked like a cowboy for a couple of days. He still gets harrased to this day about his ordeal!

This would be last thursday. Fishing was hot and I had the wife out for the first time in the ocean. We had fished for about 15 minutes and working on triple when she got a coho stuck on the kicker. I reached over and grabbed the fish flash to see if I could kick the fish off. The now the entire time shes fighting the fish I'm saying keep your tip up. Needless to say the combination turned out ugly for me. I ended up with a 6/0 gami through my left index figure. I tried pulling it out, pushing it through, and the mono trick. Hell, I even had my partner try and rip it out. ( it started to make him sick). We stayed and fished out our limit in the ocean. Upon coming to the dock I make the big mistake of the day. We parked the boat at the end of dock. Normally when I see plastic boat people I head for the slips and wait there but because of the way I was beginning to feel we parked at the end of the dock. We parked at the end of the dock and I send my partner to get the rig. Keep in mind we are at the very end of the dock in Hammond. A gentlemen in early 60's is putting his boat in the water at the same time. He gathers his crew and begins to back out. Well this guy shouldn't be allowed to drive first and foremost. He's having trouble staying straight and decides to turn the boat around in order to make it easier. Makes it about 180 when backs his boat and kicker right into mine. Keep in mind here I still have the hook in my hand and wanted to continue to fish in bay, so I'm not real happy anyway. Did I mention that my super vee is only 6 months old. Well he dents the side real good and just about punches a holes through it. So I go off like a rocket on the guy. I restrained myself from using his head as a volleyball and had the wife get his info. This evening I just got the repair estimate $4,275.00. Good thing he had insurance. The only question I've had in this situation is what hurt worse the boat or the hook? I believe the boat hurt worse.

i was getting the boat ready for sekiu a couple weeks ago,in the garage,no shoes on.(i bet you see this coming)i threw a couple of big muskie bucktails out of the boat, but they never made it to the work bench.they hit the floor i got side tracked and forgot to pick them up.ten min later i step on one.oouuch.the wife comes out and i tell her to get some ice and some heavy line because im going to rip it out.i make it to the tailgate of my truck to get some cutters in the toolbox.after i cut off the lure from the hook i realize its really deep.i end up blacked out on the tailgate.when i come to ijump straight up on my feet oouuch again.so my wife takes me to the hospital where they tell me that its the biggest hook they ever removed and have never had one in the foot.theres about six nurses in there just to check it out.they numed it up then tried to cut it but its a stainless steel hook and they couldnt cut it 30 min later they cut it with a diamond bladed ring cutter.now i allways where shoes in my garage. also hooked my brother in his big bare belly with a big bass plug.numed it up with ice wrapped a line around the bend held down on the eye and yank.another beer and we are fishing again.i think bass fishing is a bit more scary with lots of treble hooks and weeds to jerk them out of.keep on your shoes shirts and of course your glasses

Fishing for marlin in Kona. We land a 350lb Marlin (tag and release). As the deck hand is unhooking the beast, it kicks straight up and somehow the hook (about 2-1/2" opening and now free) goes right through his forarm. Fortunately, it goes over the bones and under the muscle. It took bolt cutters to cut the hook. required stitches, but did no other damage. Looked like it really hurt!

Without even mentioning how it aides in the safe release of wild fish, do the stories above give enough reason to crimp those barbs? Yeesh...

When my dads baby brother was 5 he came home from school on day and went in the garage and saw a hook hanging down from the rafters. He decided he would play fishy and got a block of wood to stand on and placed the hook against his lip but couldnt reach it so he got on the tippy toes. Well you guessed it the block slipped out from under him and hooked him deep in the lip. This was at about 3pm and no one got home until about 6pm . He had to stand on the tips his toes until someone got home to help him crying the whole time.

This topic brings up some painful memories during my youth and strengthens the reasons I carry pliers at all times. I have a half dozen mishaps that have caused me much pain and embarrasment.

Story #1) I was probally 5 or 6 when this occured and it remains one of my earliest memories. Camping one summer with my three brothers and parents was the setup for this mishap. Sitting around the fire one evening my oldest brother began swinging a hook with split shot around on a line. In circles it went and my Dad told my bro to stop before he hurt someone. At about that moment I was the lucky fella that was on the hurt side of things. He drove that hook right into my lip. I proceeded to scream and kick as my dad performed manual surgery by manually withdrawling it from my bleeding mouth...Ouch!

Story #2) This incident darn near ruined me to fishing. One summer afternoon me and my best freind were dropped off at the stream to do a little salmon fishing. I was about 12 and was fishing a popular spot with a few other adults with us. I hooked a nice size chinook and had reeled it in and was preparing to release it (without pliers), when the worst happened. I was pulling the treble out with my hand when the fish began to thrash and swim away pulling the hook into my finger. The hook went into and out the top of my finger while the fish began to pull me into deeper water. I was screaming like a banshee only to have the adults cheer me on thinking that I was overly excited. I knee dropped the fish and pinned it with my body to keep it from pulling me around. Finally someone helped me. My freinds mother showed up shortly thereafter to check on us and when she seen my problem I was taken to my freinds house for a litlle surgery. My parents weren't home and my freinds dad took me to his shed and that's where the story gets worse. He cut the hook off the treble, which about made me pass out from the pain. Then he breaks out the pliers, holds my arm still and begins to tug at the hook to remove it. I'll never forget the pain and the tears that day. He gave up after what seemed to be several minutes of extreme torture. My went home and had my parents take me to the doctor when they came home. Couple shots in the finger and the doc pulled it out the tip of my finger. I felt that barb the whole way out, thank god for pain killers.

Story #3) Took my girlfreind camping up at Detroit lake one summer when I was 18 or 19. Was getting the gear out for a little fishing when I pulled a rooster tail through the side of my finger. I stressed over this for a couple of minute while my girlfreind cried. I had no choice but to grab the lure and yank it out. It ripped out the skin from the side of nail out the side of the finger. It bled like a mother but it was a beutiful sight to see it out of my finger. A change of underwear was in order.

I just can't seem to keep the hooks out of me.
