Default Toxic Buoy 10 Silvers?!?

On my way into Bubba's to watch the Beaver game on Sunday evening, I was met by a headline on the Astoria newspaper about some sort of toxic material being found in the fish around Sand Island. It also mentioned something about the chemical causing the toxicity was banned in the seventies and that the officials have no idea where it is coming from to get into the fish.

Anybody else hear something about this?

Thanks Baja.

DDT. I haven't heard that one in a while. "...aren't sure if it is toxic to humans."

Holy Mackeral!

Most toxins end up in the fat of the fish. The best way to avoid the toxins is to fillet and skin your fish. I learned this in an ecology class over the summer.

DDT may not be toxic to humans???

Where is that DDT stuff coming from? Could it be dredge spoils from the Corps of Engineers work on the channel. DDT was banned in the '70's. As is so typical of headline (soundbite) news they tell you just enough to raise your curiosity. Other things to know;

What salmon are they talking about? Downriver smolts? What species?

Where did the salmon get exposed to DDT?

How bad is the contamination of eagles and terns?

Remember that thin egg shells, caused by chemicals like DDT and PCBs caused the ESA listing of eagles and other birds of prey in the '70's.

Tell us more KGW, we are smart enough to know the truth.
