Default Action on the nehalem

Ok fess up, whats going on? Is anyone fishing the Nehalem Bay at the jaws? If so is anyone catching any fish? Want to make the trip this week but hate to drive that far if there is no action. Anyone care to help me out. Thanks,Cagey.

I fished Nehalem yesterday, and picked up the pole cat. It was dead slow. We worked the jaws, during the incoming, and then moved up to Wheeler, and then further up the river in front of Nehalem.

The bar was wicked rough, so most of the boats weren't trolling that close to the actual jaws. Probably accounts for the lack of fish coming through. I would guess that they don't want to cross that confused whitewater any more than we do.

I had one takedown at the jaws on a herring in an RSK.

We tried whole herring, RSK, cut plug, Alvins, and spinners.

I saw one Chinook being cleaned at the wheeler marina, and heard of one silver landed down by Nehalem. I saw no fish landed in 10 hours of fishing.

There is alot of weed and junk in the bay, it was very hard to keep our lines clean. So you may want to fish the river, at least there we could keep our lines clear of the weeds and actually fish.

Good luck. If it calms down, they may get a surge of fish. Also, the Wheeler Marina picture board had like 5 fish Friday, and three fish Saturday and Sunday, so I think the whole weekend was less than spectacular.

Cagey:
For the weekend....6 fish caught, all silvers, half natives. As Threemuch stated it is pretty slow. Yesterday I did the opposite of Threemuch and made it to the jaws for the last two hours of high slack. A couple of good bites came on and it looked like a few pods of silvers were nosing around. As well as a few chinook. The jaws were pretty dead on Saturday.
As far as the weed problem, it always seems to get worse when the ocean condition is stirring things up.

Fished the Siletz Saturday for about 8 hours and had one takedown. Had a problem keeping the bullheads off my kwikfish whenever I had bait on it so I had to take the bait off and just use scents. I saw 5 or 6 nice nooks caught, 2 were trolling plug cut herring and the others were anchored up using kwickfish. It seemed like most the folks trolling by me were saying they were getting hits but not many fish to show for it.

Fished wheeler in the morning, four fish on landed two 29# and 33# bright fish. went to the jaws @ incoming lost one freight train and released one native soso (coho). i saw about seven nooks in the moring caught today. i'm starting to think outgoing tide is a nook tide. great results with outgoings the last few weeks..........

Thanks Threemuch, appreciate the response. I was a little afraid of the weed situation. It was getting that way the last time i was there. Guess i will wait a week and see whats happening then. They got to start hitting pretty soon. Ive always found the Siletz to be a slow producer. You need to spend a lot of hours on that river but generally speaking the fish are very nice size when you manage to boat one. Cagey.
