Default Custom coloring your eggs/herring!!!

Well if you would like to save some money instead of using the factory cures or Jello. Its really a simple process...

To create shades of eggs to match your water conditions....use dry food coloring.

Ever wanted to use black eggs?...what black eggs!!! simple mix equal parts of red, blue, yellow coloring together then mix with borax. This will dry brine your eggs. Want a pink shade...use white and red mixed together. Chartuese color 5 parts yellow one green. Ever hear salmon love blue and green colors....now you can find out

This will also work with dry sulfites!!

Ok so were do I get this stuff? It is used in the cake decoration industry to color sugars and coconut.

If your a wet cure type of person, the liquid cake dyes are extremely powerful. If you use a gelaton dye they can be thinned using glycerin (sp). Or mix up your own custom color bottle and put some on when you get there.
Custom brine your baits for better fishing sucess. A little goes a long ways so be careful where this stuff ends up.

Ask just about any fly guy what are there favorite colors...purple and black. Every water color has a color that will fish better than another. You just need to figure it out.

Is there a preferd brand of food coloring? Can I buy it in any food store, or would I have to make a special trip somewhere?

Not a easy thing to find, but it exists. I would suggest a local gourmet food store or a friendly bakery that may order it for you. You could also order it online from a cake decoration site. Don't think brand really makes a difference since it is only coloring.

I've played with coloring my herring. Bluing, a laundry product, is pretty common for brightening herring. Last year I tried adding some ProCure flame dye to herring that had been soaked in bluing. The purple was awsome ... as were the 3 kings I hooked that day. I can't say it was the color or my experimentation with presentation that worked, but I'm going to try both again this season.
