What's the deal with the shark attacks?
"Oh the shark bites, with his teeth dear, and he keeps them pearly white"
I have never heard of so many shark attacks as there have been this year. Experts say this isn't all that unusual but what has caused them to be so agressive? Just wondering.

Re: What's the deal with the shark attacks?
What gets me is the stupid people keep going back into the water.
Feel very sorry for the kids, but serves the adults right.
I guess after the election we knew them Florida people weren't all that bright. This just proves it.
There's no way I would step foot in the water on the East coast this year

Re: What's the deal with the shark attacks?
For all the publicity, the east coast is apparently right on track to have fewer than normal shark attacks this year. As I recall, through August they had 16 cases, and an average year is 45. Something like that. It's just the media again. Same thing as media hyping of school shootings, which have actually declined over the years.

Plus a fatality and several near fatalities. The vast majority shark attacks are not fatal.
Ever been to a beach in the southeast? I would guess that Millions of people are swimming at the beaches of florida on any given day. I would bet many more die in car wrecks on their way to the beach than die from shark attacks.
Pretty low odds, not worth worrying about in my book.

BIGSTEW - No one here is old enough to remember that song, (what song?). Who's the artist? Was it Frank somebody . . . ?
. . . and what were those words in bold letters, some kind of coded message or newspaper headline?

Re: What's the deal with the shark attacks?
I think the reason shark attacks are more frequent this year is because the bait fish are very abundant and close to shore this year. We had excellent salmon fishing right in the mouth of Humboldt Bay this year for the same reason which rarely happens here.
There are two species of sharks that are notoriously aggressive toward humans and neither reside in our coastal waters: Bull and Tiger. Tigers are especially known to finish the job!

Re: What's the deal with the shark attacks?
Thumper is right, this year has had FEWER shark attacks than average. I think it's mostly hysteria. Sure a couple people have been killed, but bicycles have almost certainly killed more people than sharks over the same time period, and nobody is lining up to turn their bikes in.
Sharks are the same as Cougars......the more often people mix with the two of them, the more people are going to get hurt. It's nobody's fault, really, you just need to realize if you're in the water (or the woods) you're in THEIR domain. You want to guarantee you don't get attacked by a shark or a Cougar? Stay out of the water or woods.

quote:
I guess after the election we knew them Florida people weren't all that bright. This just proves it.

I'll have you to know that the majority of the people in Florida, are not native species. Bunch of those people from the land of Canadia, Indiana, Virginia, etc. etc.
I come from the land of golden fried ******* and yes, there are millions of people in the water, every day, from about April 1st - Oct. 1st. That number spikes during holidays.
There's more meth in the hotel rooms than there are sharks in the water. It's just these fish are getting more and more used to human activity, plus a drunk Canadian looks a lot like a drunk Floridian to them.
3 deaths, many more people put in critical condition. It's not that there are more attacks, only more aggressive and fierce attacks from the man-biters, not man-eaters. I'd postphone the vacation to the beach if a report or two came about where a bull shark or a hammerhead was the culprit. Naw, I'd probably just get drunk and float on an $8 air mattress and get sunburned with the rest of Canada.

Re: What's the deal with the shark attacks?
Vinny! The great Bobby Darren was considered on the same level as Frank Sinatra before his untimely death - I think he got killed by a shark? Nah. Now those two guys were from my parents generation, but greatness lasts. That "shark bites" was from one of his 2 best selling hits, "Mac The Knife". His other top hit was "Beyond The Sea". We've lost way too many top artists before their time! ...
Why don't those ocean waders/swimmers do as Stew does? He puts on his fake killer whale suit with "Orca Oil" on it and the sharks scram!

Re: What's the deal with the shark attacks?
Hey I'll give a dozen Steelie lures to whomever can correctly name the origins of Mack the Knife. Bobby Darin arranged it but the original tune came from somewhere else.

Re: What's the deal with the shark attacks?
Or Louis Armstrongs version?!?
Then again, the words are by Berthold Brecht and the music by Kurt Weill. English words were added by Marc Blitzstein, written in 1928 for "Theme From the Threepenny Opera"
and introduced in that production by Weill's wife, Lotte Lenya.
That close enough?

Also performed by Ella Fitzgerald.
Sorry folks, but since I am just now learning steelie fishing, I have no lures yet. Trying to win me a starter set.

Dude, you are a walking musical encyclopedia!

That's the one Tex! You coming to the ifish BBQ? I'll bring em there for you! My wife is the biggest Bobby Darin fan ever so I know all about his stuff. Here is another musical trivia question for you, worth another 4 steelies! What was Bobby Darins real last name?

Re: What's the deal with the shark attacks?
After watching "Hannibal" the other morning...I've come to the conclsion that these sharks are "Hannibal" groupies...they just haven't tried the fried brains sauteed in wine yet....Bite a little higher sharkies!! Swimming in Florida or on the east coast for that matter is like shopping at the mall when the news broadcasts there's a sniper there. Go figure.

O.K., and thanks. I've got what I need now.
I lost count. How many artists recorded that song?
Hopefully, Napster is still up and running.
