Default Elk Lake

Spent two nights with the wife and kids at Elk Lake (above Detroit off Brietenbush rd) to try and get away from the crowds. Get away from the crowds we did, but with a 2000lb slide in camper, no road has ever made me pucker like this one did. Brutally rough and steep, you will definately get away from the crowds here. The fishing was poor with a second day lunch consisting of three small cutts and two brooks (ok and some cookies, chips, leftover spaghetti and chili dogs ). The scenery was top notch, and there was enough chipmunks and frogs to keep three boys busy for a few days. Since the average speed in and out of this place was 3 miles an hour, the wife and a kid or two walked out in front of the truck and gathered up 60+ beer cans in this wilderness area . Great place to take a family but you might want to go a little earlier in the year for the better fishing... Joe

Default Re: Elk Lake

Hey Salmonator! I was up there a couple of years ago with my boys. That is one nasty road! Last year, we decided to try a back way in that seemed to be on the map. We went in June, the day the kids got out of school. I have no idea if the road really went to Elk Lake because the road was still snowed as we got higher in elevation. So the kids had a big snowball fight, and we went down and camped along the Little North Santiam instead.

I've read that they have kokanee in there as well as trout.

Glad you had a good time.
