Avet corrosion
I've noticed a little corrosion on a couple of my Avet reel spools that have tuffline and dacron backing. Probably would never have seen it except I had a couple of rookies break line on sharks during halibut season. This revealed the corrosion issues.
What are you using to protect first of all from to keep this from happening? What do you use to get ride of this stuff that won't etch the surface of the spool?

Re: Avet corrosion
Bernie
I have been using Awsome brand cleaner
I just spray it on full strength and let it sit for a minute then rinse it off with fresh water
This stuff really melts the corrosion and salt away
You might have to use a soft cloth to put some pressue on it if it is corroded real bad

Don't worry Bernie, Bob is just jealous.
I picked up a oil from Eezox that is made for reels and boats, its is supposed to have a higher density than water so water can't get under it. Probably will not use it on the spool but about every where else is going to get a coat - all that grease makes working on those reels no fun.
Is it really corrosion or is it just salt crust?

May be just salt Crust. Reminds me a little of Odin with a cigar. Get the picture?

Re: Avet corrosion
I noticed some salt crystals when I removed my mono top shot a few weeks ago. Do most of you guys rince your reels off with something besides water?

In that case, don't knock the crust off, you don't wanna see what's underneath

Re: Avet corrosion
That's the down side of spectra. I just got done washing the line on my long rang reels. 20 of 'em and all with spectra. As I have just converted to spectra I was lucky and learned my lesson early. The only scale I had was on the LX silvers I spooled up two years ago as a test. That corrosion was very minor and I buffed it off with some fine steel wool then coated with "Corrosion X". But the big lesson is; I'll wash my spectra at the end of my season every year. Just as I'll service the reels at the end of the season.

Re: Avet corrosion
Bernie, is your reel silver? Also I rinse the heck out of the rods and reels after every trip - one the Avets, lock the drags on full and let her rip with the hose from several directions

Re: Avet corrosion
It is the silver one that I noticed the corrosion on. I rinse my reels after every trip.

Re: Avet corrosion
Bernie, that stuff I was using on the boat this year seems to have worked on the fish gear as well. It's called SALT AWAY. I picked some up at west marine. I'm sure you can also buy on line.
The manufacture claims that just plain fresh water will not get all of the salt off of things. This stuff cuts through all of it.
I've seen no deposits build up since I started to use it.

Reason I asked is I'm wondering if the anodizing helps protect the aluminum - all mine are either blue, purple or red

Re: Avet corrosion
Another vote for "Salt Away". Got mine at Fisherman's. Works well, including on Avets. Dissolved every bit of build-up.

Re: Avet corrosion
"Salt away" is a good product I spray my reels down with it several times a day then flush with fresh water. BUT when spectra is in the water it picks up salt. You wind the line back onto the reel in a tight pack and "Salt away" can't get to the salt that is deep within the spool. Nor can you flush it out. It's trapped inside the spectra and nest to the spool.

So how do you go about removing the salt, say at the end of the season? Do you wash the line as you spool it off the reel into a spare spool or something? If so, do you use and electric spooler, because that would be a slow job!
I saw that Cabela's carries a corrosion resistant product made by Penn. The product description reads:
"Preventative maintenance is a must, especially if you fish saltwater; however, dirt and debris from freshwater can shorten the life of a reel as well. Penn reel cleaner, with corrosion inhibitors, removes all build-up from your reels to extend life, lengthen casts and keep them looking good for years of hard use."
For those of you who apply Salt Away and other products to your reels to remove salt and corrosion, do you apply it to your spectra, too? Have you noticed the spectra responds at all to the products? Any bleaching or weakening present?
Thanks,
Aaron

Never seen any crud growing on the graphite spool on my 4/0 wide. The screws, brass parts and side plates are a different story.
Never dull and/or Simichrome will cut heavy buildup.

Re: Avet corrosion
Aaron,
Other folks have done write ups on this subject far better than I can. If I can get this link to come up and "IF" it's not again the rools. This guys tells the whole story.

Re: Avet corrosion
One thing he doesn't talk about is protecting the spool. I just this morning read of a guy that puts "Chap Stick" on his spools before reloading. I would think a boat wax would be better. I doe no! Next time I'll put something on my spools just in case.
