Default 1st Season coast elk

How did the 1st season end up? I heard it was pretty crowded over there. Im heading out this weekend to hopefully find a spike in the wilson or trask unit, i know of a couple that are over there, hopefully they laid low last weekend!!!

There were more than a lot of people. That was my 1st time with a general season rifle tag, I usually archery hunt. I could not believe how many people were out. I was lucky enough though to find a secluded spot and was at the right place at the right time.

Jeremy- if you go check out that area I told you about let me know what you think. I know of at least one other spike running around in the same area I got mine.

Well it went pretty good for us. There were plenty of unused tags in our group but we did get a spike on opening morning. Saturday there were at least 2 other spikes that I saw coming out of the woods. I am sure there are still a few spikes out there, good luck.

Was hunting Saddle Mtn unit (3pt or better). I'd scouted area during deer season, saw plenty of Shootable bulls. The elk all moved on to another zip code and never left a forwarding address. :frown: Only saw a few cows, and a couple of deer.

Beat the brush, timber, glassed clear cuts, reprod patches, searched the area I'd seen the bulls previously, and saw nothing that was definitly fresh.

Only bull I did see was a 5pt in the back of somebodies truck.

So Tag soup for Deer/Elk for me (at least Oregon tags) for this year. Glad I got my speed goats and deer in Wyoming last month.

Saddle mtn. was full of road hunters flyin up and down gravel roads. 99% of the people I saw were in their trucks or standing outside of their trucks taking a leak. Pretty sad hunting if you ask me

Yes, there were LOTS of trucks all over the roads. I went in on foot and Mtn. Bike, and got behind locked gates back 2-3 miles. Saw nobody in the area when I got behind the gates. Unfortunately the only thing I DID see in there was a deer and logging crews.

yea i will agree with sea jypzee there were way to many people hunting and way to many road hunters.. if people road hunt they need to atleast learn how to... cause the places i wanted to watch in the morning people screwed up cause they parked right were the elk cross from canyon to canyon.. all the people had to do was walk maybe 50 yards and i can garuntee some one would of got something since there beds were just off the side of the road..

Where were you when you saw them? in a truck? Just because people are traveling in a vehicle doesnt mean it is their method of hunting.

Well you get that assumption when every clear cut you come to the guys are covering every top of them sitting in their trucks glassing then pealing out and heading to another area. I felt like Id get shot if I were in that reap rod or clear cut. We did 90% of our hunting out of the vehicle

Lots of hunters this year for some reason. We hunted off diamond mill rd and did not see any elk. Did see a group of guys pulling 2 spikes down a hill off of diamond mill rd. We hit Stimpson behind Hagg Lake on Sunday and saw a 5x5 and a spike in the back of a truck. Was told that they killed 5 bulls on the opener. Did see a very large herd of elk just before the mill. Must have been 60-80 elk in this herd.

Well one of the big bulls in one of our hunting spots was shot by my friends brother-in-law. It was a coastal bull the scored 336 before the 60 day drying period. Sorry I don't have any pics.

I ended up walking Saddle Mtn. area on Saturday and Sunday. There were two taken Saturday on the ridge across from where we were walking. Don't know about the size. I noticed a lot of people this year but I was glad to see a lot of guys putting in good distances on foot. I've had the nicest encounters with hunters this year. We tend to not drive around very much and stick to covering ground walking and I noticed a huge drop in seeing track compared to last year. A lot of cutting too. You would have to go up there almost daily to keep track of how much they are clearing.

Yesterday morning before walking in I ran into a guy from a party that took a 4x6 out of the Browns Camp area opening day. I hope I can get over to the east side next year.

I joined my borther on a walk about last Sunday in the Scappoose unit and i noticed that as well. We ran into a number of hunters but other than the standard no bulls grumbling. An odd thing happend we saw a herd of 25 cows yep all cows as were we closing in on them we ran into some other hunters hunting the same bunch like 7 of us all hunting the same bunch every one got a good laugh not sure if we would have been laughing if it had bulls...

[ I've had the nicest encounters with hunters this year.

Maybe you ran into the same herd we chased around saturday in the scappoose unit, we did catch up with the bulls that were a little separated from the herd in the early afternoon, which consisted of 2 branch bulls and 2 spikes but they never presented us with any good shots, I had the most fun of my life chasing all 4 around a pretty decent stand of timber that was very thick, it was a serious game of hide and go seek, I would hear them move, then stop and then move then stop for three hours , but only had one visual of a full elk body standing still at 30 yrds but it had its head in a bush so thick that i could not see if it had any bone on its head, after what seemed like for ever it broke loose and lost me in the brush, it did not help that the under brush was as tall as me, i wasnt going to risk it not being one of the bulls, finally they must have busted out the side and dissapeared when my buddy wasnt looking.
No success but lots of fun this year.

Their were more people than I have ever seen.In the brush lookin at the cuts rd hunting ect.Diamond mill I know of 5 bulls that were shot.1 super nice 5x6 that was very thick.Saw a hispanic guy that scored on a spike. Was told another 2 really nice bulls were shot off fb 8.Very crowded this year. The elk we had spotted disappeared. We hunted very hard coverd alot of ground. Was talkin to one guy who shot a 5 point.Their group got the one he shot and a spike. They seem to think the elk are lower.Dont know. They def moved since deer season were we hunted. The bull I heard of out of browns was shot by a rd hunter,The bull was moving down at about 11.He was a 4x5.
