Diawa Saltist reels
After reading Alan's post and not wanting to hijack it I decided to start a new one
I have some question as to wheter or not I made a good choice in a new reel
I just bought a Diawa Saltist 40 and can't help but wonder if I could end up with spool or frame issues
Should I keep it or return it?
Who owns and uses this reel?
Opinions please
Thanks

Re: Diawa Saltist reels
I have about 12 of these reels and have used them for 2 years. They have been on more than 25 outings for Tuna and haven't had one single issue! The gears are oversized and the drags are strong and smooth. I love the reels and don't think I could have made better choices!

Hank
I have about 20 of these and they are bullet proof. They are very popular because they hold up very well.
If someone has a problem with one I'd say it's an exception and Daiwa will fix it for them.

Re: Diawa Saltist reels
Hank,
I'd say keep it! I do not own any, but I have several friends who own them and they are very dependable. In comparison to the gears in my Shimano reels they are much bigger. Even if you read Alantani's post he wanted to make sure everyone understands that he likes the reels.
I think it will treat you well. Order a new set of Carbontex drags and and fish it till it hurts!

Re: Diawa Saltist reels
i think they're a great reel. they are very simple to work on. carbontex drag washers are readily available, cal's drag grease is easy to come by, access to bearings is easy for regular service and there are several nice handle upgrades. like the saltiga, trinidad and torium, you have an anti-reverse roller bearing and a back up ambassaduer-style dog. the safe limit for this anti-reverse system is really 15#'s. any more and there is an increased (and in my opinion, unacceptable) risk that the anti-reverse system will fail and the handle will go knucklebuster on you.
for 15#'s of drag or less, i believe that the saltist is an excellent reel. just grease the screws, not the screw holes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had a Torium and a Trinidad both go knucklebuster on me. The Trinidad was last year on a long range trip and the drag locked the handle came around knocked my knuckles and then caught a tooth and away the reel went with a G-loomis rod into the abyss...... sad day...... expensive day......
The Torium was this year on a albacore, and it actually broke the anti reverse Prawl...... I manange to hang onto this one caught the fish and then sent it in to Shimano for repair.... It is sad that the reel is capable of delivering so much more drag than the anti reverse can take.....
WIth Cal's drive plate the reels can deliver around 30lbs of drag....
Sorry to Hi-jack Hank, but it is on topic.... maybe?

Re: Diawa Saltist reels
no hijack, this is definitely on topic.
i've taken the liberty of making up some categories of fishing reels. i've done this on my own. yup, had a little too much time on my hands. so here is what i came up with. i would call a first generation reel one that will hold 300 yards of 30# dacron and deliver 7-10#'s of drag. a second generation reel is one that holds 300 yards of straight 30-40# mono and can deliver up to 15#'s of drag. a third generation reel is one that will hold 300 yards of 50-60# spectra, a short 30, 40 or 50# topshot and deliver a max of 25#'s of drag.
good examples of second generation reels would be the shimano trinidad/torium 30/40, the daiwa saltiga/saltist 30/40, the avet jx/lx, the shimano tld 15, and the penn 500/112h (barely!). good examples of third generation reels would be the progear classic series 501/551, the accurate 270/870N, and the penn torque 100/200. please note well, the differences between second and third generation reels. these newer spectras and high strength monofilaments allow you to fish similar sized third generation reels at nearly twice the drag range of their second generation counterparts. case in point, where an avet jx will deliver a maximum of 15# of drag, an accurate 870 will deliver 25-30. a shimano trinidad 20 is safe at 15#'s of drag but a penn torque 200 can be cranked down to 25#'s.
third generation versus second generation. spectra is making all the difference in the world!

i would call them second generation. the stack of three jigmaster drag washers allows them an absolute maximum of 15#'s of drag.

i'd call the 6/0 an old school second generation reel. one that's killed many a fish, i might add.
the daiwa sld is interesting. i've worked on two. one i was able to ramp up to 35#'s of drag at strike. the other was a nightmare. i still have not fully recovered and generally recommend anything besides the daiwa lever drags.

Re: Diawa Saltist reels
I am, too, pondering buying a daiwa saltist stt40h (6.4-1 ratio). My main use is for sturgeon from the bank. This reel is the next step above the sealine shv/sha seiries. Can the saltist reel capalble of "long" distance casting (~150yd). Has any one use the reel for long distance casting purpose? Can it be magged and knobby magged?
From what I read, this is a quality reel with the backing of good daiwa services. Thanks for your experienced opinion.

This reel has great balance and casts nice, but you need to make sure you don't buy the high speed retrieve..... bank fishing needs torque.
I have fished my friends reel and it is comparable to my Shimano Torium...

Re: Diawa Saltist reels
I'm surprised that you had difficulty with the second SLD, Alan. I have two, and they seem fairly straightforward to me. And I'm sure you're in a different universe than me when it comes to knowledge and experience with reels. At any rate, I love my SLD's, and hope your deep psychological wounds heal with time. Seriously, maybe you give them another try and report back.
I get 28# of drag with my 6/0 senators, and they hold 450 yards of 50# mono, which looks like they'd be third generation old school. They absolutely kick butt.

My reel is the sst40 but it only has a 4.9:1 ratio
Sure is a smooth reel I can't wait to use it

The Saltist is a great reel and would be the next logical step up but if you decide to really get serious about casting great distances the Daiwa Saltiga surf reel is the next step above the Saltist and it won the US Surf Casting Championships last year.
Staying with the lower retrieve rate on the Saltist would be better that the high speed you've listed...go with the STT40 (4.9:1 ratio)

Re: Diawa Saltist reels
I have 2 of the 30s and 2 of the 40s and have been really happy so far. I am not a reel connoisseur and I don't have much basis for comparison, but they are smooth and seem pretty well built. You can get these new on eBay for $115-120. I don't think your going to find much more reel in that price range.
