More trouble for ODFW
In case you didn't already know the F&W Commission got a new chairman: John Esler.
Why is this important. John Esler was the project manager for PGE's hydropower relicensing division. He's also the guy who came up w/ the plan to tear down the dams on the Sandy. The plan to take down the dams was a PR stunt. Right now it is on hold because the affects on fish and sediments are more complex than anyone predicted. The removal of the dams would have essentially put an end to hatchery production of fish on the Sandy river.
The commission sets policy for ODFW. They also are now able to appoint the director of ODFW. Right now that is Lindsay Ball. Good guy, but OSP not a biologist. He'll get things done, but he isn't about to rock the boat. Who knows who Esler and the commission will appoint next.
Bottom line is that we have someone from the hydorpower community who formulated a poorly planned idea to remove dams as a PR stunt and in the process get rid of hatchery fish on a popular local river. This person is now in charge of the comission that appoints ODFW's director and sets policy. Does anyone else see a problem w/ this? Wild fish nuts are crazy for him. I wonder why. Look for trouble from this for the next couple of years.
