Re: Question for Bankies
greetings fellow bank maggot!
i don't normally fish the columbia, nor do i normally plunk. however, i know those who do and am a little familiar with what it takes.
first off, twenty pound test is 'light line' in the columbia. this is mostly because it generally takes upwards of seven ounces of lead to hold the bottom out there. (if you think i'm kidding i can have you talk to my friend who was drift fishing with two and half ounces of lead in 'slack water' near bonneville.) generally, you tie off a two to four foot dropper from the mainline down to your weight. then a two to four foot leader to the lure of your choice: spin-n-glos, corkies, birdies, spinners, wobblers, old shoes, crescent wrenches, beer cans, etc. whatever 'secret weapon' has been passed down through your generations.
you may get funny looks from other anglers regarding your piece of terminal tackle. however, here's a story for you. i was at meldrum bar plunking with a double drop rig. on one drop, i was running eggs, the other had sand shrimp. the guy to my left came over and said, "hmm, sand shrimp. odd choice," and wandered back. the guy on my right came over and said, "hmm, eggs. odd choice," and wandered back. i didn't catch any fish that day, but neither did they.
good luck out there and give us a report when you get back.
