Re: Sandy silvers
no info on either point just yet. i'm on the odfw mailing list so if they increase the limit to four, i'll pass it on. as for fishing reports, i talked to a guy who landed and released a silver at lewis and clark last weekend. the hatchery reported their first jack back on the 24th. all reports have it that the sandy is going to get it's run before the clack.
so, go out there and fish. when you get back, give us a report. i'm going to be out sunday and will report in after i get done fileting some fish (i hope).

Sandy silvers
Hey there guys, man am I getting excited about river silvers. Anyone know whether the silvers are already a good ways up the Sandy? Or are they mostly near the mouth still? And any word on whether/when there will be a 4-fish limit on area rivers?

Re: Sandy silvers
Well I hit the lower Sandy today, nothin'. The silvers just aren't quite there yet it seems. That guy who caught one at Lewis and Clark was pretty lucky I would say. I know what to use too, but they just weren't there. Could be any day though.

Re: Sandy silvers
All we need is a bit of rain and cooler weather for the sandy to clear up and the fish will be caught. The fish are there just need a bit clearer water. Might get that this weekend, not much but maybe enough to clear up the river.

Re: Sandy silvers
was just out there this morning. saw fish rolling in the holes. couldn't tell what species. some were small enough to be silvers. no takers. i know the chinook are in. saw some earlier in the week. steelhead are present as well. water temp around 62 deg. this morning. still a little too warm perhaps. hoping to get into a chinook. not much for silvers. like to have a handle on how to get those devils. there just not the bitin' kind when they get into the river. although i did talk to one guy a few years back who told me an interesting story. he was fishing below cedar cr. and couldn't get anything to hit his fresh eggs. he ran out of them and had to put his old freezer- burned ones on. said he couldn't keep this fish off. I saw him walking up the back with his limit and he seemed like a nice, honest, genuine guy. I'm looking for some freezer-burned eggs for the upcoming season. anyone got a pound or two for sale?

Re: Sandy silvers
I need help with river cohos. Can never figure out what they want and never seem to have what others are catching them on. I would be very appreciative if someone would share the knowledge. Even with the best of baits or lures I will not make a dent in anyones limits as I only get a few changes at them each season.

Re: Sandy silvers
Snapshot,
First off I would go out and buy whatever it was that everyone was catching fish with! Everyone is going to have their favorite methods in hooking small river silvers. I think you will find however that most are pitching spinners, drifting corkies and/or yarn or drifting eggs. All work in certain conditions. All I'm attempting to say is 'be prepared' when you get there.
My personal favorite for small river silvers is a size 3 or 4 silver-plated or brass french blade spinner. Good luck!

Re: Sandy silvers
Boy, I envy all you who have time to fish this fall! With a new baby and my wife going back to the night shift I doubt Ill get more than a day or two to fish. As far as what to use on the Sandy, Ill tell ya, most guys use spinners. You'll see guys pitching gigantic blue fox spinners, but those who are really successfull, ive found, go with smaller sizes. I like the ones with the orange blade, but I doubt it really matters. The important thing is to get out on the water and keep at it. I dont know why some people think the silvers are poor biters, last year there were complete beginners down on the river with their push button snoopy rods catching fish, no joke. Of course, I do have a secret weapon or two for those "off days", but if you want to know what that is you'll have to catch me using it sometime. All I can say is be versatile and dont limit yourself to traditional salmon/steelhead gear and methods when fishing for coho in the rivers.

Re: Sandy silvers
My recommendation is to find the cheapest #3 or #4 spinners in brass or silver and just keep fishing them until until you start catching fish. Persistence will pay off. Make sure you get there early as the first few casts with a spinner in a hole are often the most productive. You can cover a lot of water with spinners. If nothing is happening on spinners then try eggs.
Not sure that spinner color really makes that big of difference. ChuckDog above fishes homemade silver most of the time and I fish homemade brass most of the time and we seem to both catch fish. The key is persistence and knowing where the fish lie.
