Spray Paint
Not really a rant,
But, really I could not believe what I had to do to buy A can of spray paint for my crab bouys.
1. Scan product
2. Wait for manager, who is busy.................
3. Show ID with age, No sir your Fed Id will not work,(Hanging around my neck) Am 54 and and fat, not your basic tagger.
4. Drivers lic # taken, sign this form, cash register receipt # number logged on the signed form.
Have a good day sir.
If, I did tag a wall or store, how would that information help track me down.
I can but a gun and ammo faster that the can of paint.
What have we done to our selfs.
But I do have a pretty colored Bouy now.

Re: Spray Paint
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH.... the reality of somebody insisting that something be regulated for whatever reason!
I know I would have been frustrated as well, but I probably would have gotten in trouble from laughing so danged much that they probably would have refused to sell me the paint and recommend I go to the local bar and have a drink!!!

Re: Spray Paint
Yeah! Kinda like the place where you bought the paint??!!!
I'm surprised that regulation is in place at all. Am I wrong in thinking that most "taggers" get the paint they use from their parent's or someone elses garage? Now that I think of it, I wonder if that is a local ordinance? The last time I bought paint for a project a few weeks ago I went into Lowes and picked it right off the shelf and paid for it without event with everything else I purchased.

Re: Spray Paint
First cold medicine and now spray paint......what has this world come to. I mean, what if I have a cold and need to spray paint something in my shop at home? Are we going to have to fill out federal documents to purchase such items. Next thing you know I am going to have to tell my (11 almost 12) year old that she is going to have to sit in a booster seat when I drop her off a school in front of all of her friends becuse she is too short for the regular seat......oh wait, I did that already.

So why not just buy your paint in Washington?

Re: Spray Paint
Nope its not an Oregon thing. Its a new Portland City ordance that was enacted last week i beleive. They think by restricting who can buy paint their tagging problem will be solved. The only problem is that all the citys around them are not enacting similar ordances. Meaning all you have to do is take a short max ride into the next town. Steal... i mean buy all the spray paint you could ever need and ride back into portland and have at it.
Portland is currently pushing all other citys in the area to enact the same kind of ordance to fix this problem. I can say for sure though i am completley aginst this and hope they fail.
Just another example of the crinimals ruinion laws/a way of living for the regular law abiding people.

I understand your frustration, I’m ready to be flamed I have on my fire suit on.
Nevertheless, having to deal with graffiti on our utility boxes I appreciate the fact that someone is trying to help out. We the taxpayers are footing the bill for a lot of the clean up. I personally like the idea.

That wasn't my intent, but if buying paint out of state is inconvenient, then I say by local.
Personally I'm sick and tired of seeing wannbe gang bangers spray painting everything that doesn't move in my city. It blights the neighborhood, and in my mind, reduces the quality of life.
If locking up the paint slows down this process, then so be it.
We have seen what doing nothing has accomplished.

Barney, I was funning ya. Like $4.77 is going to hurt Oregons economy.
I share your view. Lock the stuff up. And I think tar and feather then release would be better.

Re: Spray Paint
The problem I have with all of this (I am in the restaurant business) is that the laws put the burden on those who sell it and buy as opposed to law enforcement finding a solution and dealing with it. If a tagger wants paint then they will find it...filling out paper work doesn't do a darn thing.
You want to see tagging decrease? Make a mandatory 6 month sentence without the ability for it to be reduced. As it is...all you get is a fine...and guess who ultimately pays...Mom and Dad. Which is fitting in many ways but it sure doesn't deal with the problem.
I'd love to see work camps started up again instead of standing around on the side of the highway pretending to pick up litter. I'm not talking chain gangs but I'm sick and tired of almost every punishment just being another form of revenue for the city, county or state.

Re: Spray Paint
Instituting legistlation like this is a slippery slope. The question is where will it stop? Cough syrup, spray paint... what will be next? How many legal products will we end up requiring ID to buy? What happens to your personal information that they gather it?

So that means increased taxes, are you willing to take on that additional fiscal obligation? Locking up the paint looks like a much cheaper idea.

Or maybe it means that they spend the money they already have more responsibly...instead of everyone getting new Dodge Chargers. Perhaps putting the bulk of officers on the street when these crimes happen as opposed to just during rush hour for increased revenue. The money is already there...how to you think they passed this law in the first place? How much has it cost retail outlets to provide locked up paint and paperwork? Do you think you aren't paying more for that?
I'm really not trying to start an argument nor am I bashing on the officers that do get the new Chargers (good for them)...it's their bosses and our politicians that keep taking the easy way out and leaving the burden on regular folk.
Whether or not new or better laws get passed I can pretty much guarantee that taxes will increase!

Re: Spray Paint
Maybe they thought you were a "Huffer" and not a tagger at the store. It sounds funny on the one hand we complain about having to jump though hoops to get a stupid can of paint. Then in another post we are mad because it is one more thing that we are regulated, and in another, we wonder why can't law enforcement do their job and just police these vandals?
Regulate or not to regulate? Tax or no tax? There are no free rides.......unless you are a military contractor with a no compete bid. Then we have the appearance of regulations, with actually no regulations.
Ok back to my Huffing....Gold is my favorite.

Now instead of going to the store and buying the paint to do the tagging they will probably break into our garages to steal paint.

This may work out well for the merchants, a lot of taggers steal the paint in the first place, so locking it up might just help.
It's a positive effort, that won't cost citizens anything more than a little inconvenience.

Exactly! Probably use stolen credit cards too.
If the process was designed to induce inconvenience for everyone, it is flawed. I think streamlining the checkout process should be the first step.
