"Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
Ohh my goodness, the gillnetters are threatening not to fish!..... I highlighted a couple of passages from this mornings Columbian Newspaper. (Sorry I don't have time to type the whole thing)
"Salmon Fishers are threatening to stay home this season if they don't get better prices for their catches",,,
"The gillnetters say they won't untie their boats unless they get 50 cents per pound from canneries, 20 cents per pound higher than local processors have indicated they're willing to pay" "We simply can't make it at the price they're offering, said Gary Soderstrom, a gillnetter and president of the Columbia River Fisherman's Protective Union" (They have a union???)
"If gillnetters stick to the 50 cents local canneries will focus on other sea foods to support business this fall"
"Gillnetters have a problem as costs might exceed what they can catch. Gasoline is pricey and drift nets cost between $2,500 and $4,000."
"Gillnettes believe they'll need unity to succeed. Despite the low prices some might continue to fish or seek other markets" (Stupid and greedy )
"And the forecast looks stormy for years to come. Overseas farmed fish are predicted to continue flooding the domestic markets, and the fishers and processors say they can't compete with countries that have lower wages and costs."
It is becoming increasing clear to me that Gillnetters are fishing simply because they can. If you can't make money commercial fishing, why do it? Its obvious there is no shortage of fish.

Because these are bad, bad, bad people, and their mothers didn't show them enough attention as children. They feel they answer to no God.

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
Hey, this is great, not a net out there! This should set the standard gentlemen. Do not offer what the gill netters want, that way we won't have them screwing up the river. Hey, even better. Let's not buy any tribal fish either. Maybe they will discontinue fishing too! (NOT)
I do feel a little sorry for the netters because they have families too. But, I just do not like the idea of nets in the rivers.

Supply and demand - from what I saw out in the Columbia, the going rate for salmon this year should be about ... FREE !

Right on Phish!
If the gillnetters scrapped their boats this year, they may be able to recover their losses.
A single tear rolls down my cheek.

Amazing-
Just goes to show the brain power these people possess-- they are just now figuring out that commercial fishing is a less than profitable adventure.....

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
MAN ANNOUNCES PLANS TO GET "F---ED UP THIS WEEKEND"
Lebanon, Oregon-In a statement released early Thursday afternoon at Schuck's, gillnetter Kenny Ray Coble announced plans to drive into Astoria on Friday and Saturday and "get drunk out of his f---ing mind."
Coble's plans include, but are not necessarily limited to, drinking an unspecified quantity of Budweiser, smoking numerous Marlboro cigarettes, visiting various strip clubs, and driving his 1978 Chevrolet Malibu at high speeds.
When asked for a comment, Coble's girlfriend Chastity Bowe gave the following, "That son of a b**ch was supposed to take me and his kid to the water park this weekend. I hate him."
This will be the first weekend in 2 months that Coble will be able to engage in leisure activities due to his responsibilities aboard a commercial gillnetter's boat.
"I can't f---in' wait for this weekend. I already told that ho Chastity that I weren't taking her to Magic Waters no more. And she still ain't proved that that kid is mine." Added Coble.
Mr. Coble sports a grandiose mudflap.

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
What really cracked me up when I read the article was the owner of the processing plant saying that the government should step in with subsidisies for the gillnetters.
I am so sorry that the price is not there for these poor misguided soles..... Mabey market pressuer will provide a solution to a problem that our legislatures are unwilling to fix.......Soooooooo, lets all buy more fish farm fish and let the gill new boats rot in the harbor.....

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
In an unrelated story, local smack dealers have vowed to pack up town and take their business elsewhere unless the street prices of the drug go above their record-low levels.
"It's gotten to the point where a man can hardly make a dishonest living" one dealer commented on the condition that he remain anonymous. "I'm going to take the plight of my story right to the White House. If they can bail out other American-based global corporations they can kick me a few mil. I got connections in Columbia, man!"

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
Yeah I'll bet they don't fish! Greed is what motivates them anyway. If this bounty of salmon headed upstream causes just one gillnetter to go out of business then it will be wonderful! I have absolutely not one iota of sympathy for these money grubbers. They can sell their boats!

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
I bet those boys could make a good living by converting those net-scowels into sport Charter Boats. $80 a pop all summer long would add up. .......or maybe they just don't want to work 'that' long for their money.

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
Beutiful...this whole story brought a tear to my eye.....NOT. Isn't supply and demand great. A couple more bountiful years and maybe we can expect them to disappear forever...what a wonderful world it could be. Makes me want to go buy a farm fish to celebrate the wonderful news.

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
It's the same old song and dance. Talk a big story about strength of members before the first day of netting. They all wait at the starting gate and will take a dime per pound from the cat food producers. CASH TALKS - THREATS WALK.

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
******, where did ya get the video of last year's ifishstock party? Cool. ... Stew, it isn't just that the gillnetters are money grubbers - actually most of them have admitted that they gillnet because they get off on it! Sheeeyat! They enjoy the friggin feeling of manlyness they somehow get from motor spooling in a bunch of dead fish?!? And they know they don't get much profit ... until maybe someday they hit a jackpot goverment buyout that is! So they screw with the runs, including native fish, and throw a wrench in the most popular outdoor northwest recreational activity of sportfishing. They are @$$holes with a dubious license to crap on fish and fishing! BAN ALL GILLNETS

Re: "Fishers Vow to Stop Work unless Prices Go Up"
They probably would sell to cat food producers wouldn't they? Man that just sucks!!!!! I figure they are just waiting for a government buy out and they need to show a loss in order to get it. We dropped the ball when we had the chance to make sure there is no commercial interest represented on the ODFW
