FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
I communicated today with Osprey about the next Floatilla. Of course Os was the star of Floatilla I, with just 2 fish (real slow day), and the goat of Floatilla II along with the Redneck . I'm sure they're eager for attonement. I had to miss II because of the worthy Dream Casters kids fishing day, and 'Fly and I had all we could do to hold a rod during the first one (we lost 1 steelhead - got into 4 steelies three days earlier while doing a 'cheater's scout' on the Satsop though , but they didn't count), so I am pumped up for III. ...
We would like some *ideas* from you guys that are interested in the next and likely biggest one yet - certainly the most fish present! It would be nice to have a theme again (II was "revenge of the South"). And we need a day/date and a river. I will put in some ideas here, with your's to follow; so we can get a consensus of opinions. The only "opinion" that actually means anything is I am really confident in OR guys outfishing WA guys - easily! ..... jk - don't need the pressure . ...
* Dates - I think Saturday's would be best due to the fact some guys actually work. I think somewhere between mid-Sept. to mid-Oct., or even late Oct., would make a good date. Most of the rivers will be stuffed with cohos and also many chinooks; even without rain in the bigger rivers, in case of another dry fall.
* Rivers - The Cowlitz, NF Lewis, and Clackamas are all predicted to get record returns of silvers in the weeks to come - somewhere between 80,000 to 100,000 each! And some kings too. They are big enough that we can fish them even with a dry fall again. They also can accommodate a lot of boats - both sleds and drift boats - or catarafts for the wussies . I think we should pick a planned river with backup rivers in case the first choice is blown out with rain - such that we can change on short notice via the BBs, if necessary.
* Prizes? - I also think it would be nice to have some kind of prizes for most and biggest fish this time. No bets or money (illegal). I normaly am against contests because it promotes C&Bing, but this year we are going to get a lot of excess hatchery 'catfood'. And these rivers are going to have 4 to 6 fish per person limits to get these fish harvested. So keep 'em and reap 'em. We can put together teams in boats somehow ... ideas for that? And any other ideas you guys and gals have? Thanks.
* After float social? - The first Floatilla was so cold we all lost a little brass that day. It wasn't a good one for a post fishing get together. F' II was better for that. Ideas for a get together place afterward would be cool. Such as a campground or takeout if the weather is nice, or maybe a near by dancing or pizza joint alternative if it's raining.
* Theme ideas -
-- "FLOATILLA III, ...
... slay ride on the 'hos" or; slayin
the 'nooks and 'hos!"
... this time it's WAR" - too harsh?
... fear this fleet"
... destiny of pride"
... armada of Kings"
... slaying of the hogs and Dawgs" - cool
... float 'til a WA dude catches one"
... rise of the rednecks" - not bad
... float or bloat" - naah, lame
... where's Jerry Shipe?"
... Os and 'Yall skunked again"
... Oly guys can come" - (sounds
like only but girls welcome)
Consensus name is Slaughter On The Water - good one that describes what will happen to the fish!

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
RT,
Howza bout you ducklings come over to Washington and we could do a little night fishing. I know we could hold our own against y'all. I'll put my lighted vortexes up agin your best chit. We could meet at Mcnary Dam and when the dust settles you could buy us (the winners) breakfast. If you guys are afraid of the dark, we could tape glowsticks to your arms and legs. If it is too dark to find your willy, we could tape a mini lightstick to it!

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Hey FnF, you 'eastside wheats' can only catch those fish by sneaking up on them in the dark, eh? That's too easy dude! We want something at least a little bit challenging. Although with record numbers of silvers around it won't be overly challenging - for duckies anyway. ... As for finding my Willy (sp?), it's 16 ft. long and 54 inches wide. So I won't need any lightstick to find mine. I'll pass on your little helper trick that you use though - although I somehow figure you play with yours enough that you don't have a hard time finding it in the dark; regardless how small your 'boat' is. . BTW, don't use the word "tape" in a thread that the Redneck might see. - RT

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
RT,
Since I am a Hanford worker, my willy glows in the dark. Soon you downriverers will have it too! Remember the pipefitters golden rule! Just wait till your men start changing sexes like out Reach fish? Wait a minute, is it already happening? Did all your Oregon women start out as men? No offense, some are kinda purdy! Seriously though, no I can't be serious this time of the morning. Washingtonians will always outfish Oregonians. More letters in our name than yours!

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Anytime, Anyplace, I will be there.
For prizes I will put up a 25 dollar gift certificate good at Kalama River bait and tackle.
So what team should I be on? OR or WA? I spend about equeal time in both now.
As for location I move it should be a SW WA stream like the Lewis or Cowlitz.
I move we all go for pizza and brews afterwards.
Lets get this thing going!

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
When we were talking about this right after the Revenge of the South we had tentatively set a date of the 6th of October. The lower Cowlitz will just be smokin' then. Lot's of river to fish, at that time it's really from I-5 down. Only drawback with the Cow is that there really no place close (that I know of) to have a post fish party. The Lewis has the city park on the lake in Woodland that we could go to after and there is an RV park up river that people could stay at. Probably doesn't matter which river as both should have a ton of fish!! Either river is cool with me.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
You know,
If we're shooting for mid-October, the Chehalis/Satsop might be a good choice. Chehalis is big enough for sleds, Satsop small enough for Cats and since we want a post-fish get-together where Os and I can congratulate each other ( ), there's many places for that.
Just a thought.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
I vote for the Lewis. Easy access, places for the after harvest get together.... The "winners" of whatever catagory should receive offical designated bragging rights for a few months.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
I'd love to fish the NF Lewis. 6 ho limit, kings open this year, maybe a late summer-run. Oh wait, I'll need a ride I don't think the skeeter will make that run. Maybe I can just meet everyone at the mouth?
Any saturday would be good. I vote for "slaughter on the water"
Anybody got an open seat?

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
DanS or Osprey may have an open seat, but I don't think they meant "boat".
Jeffhead or RT, gotta seat open on a sled for me? What about a redneck seat on the DB, DanS? Bueller. bueller. anyone? anyone?

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
The only thing about having it this one in WA is that most of the fish will be in the upper river by the time everything will be set up.. I think that the Clackamas will be a good river to have it on..

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Jeff, I forgot about the Sat. Oct. 6th tentative date for III. Let's go with that date, unless there is a consensus for another date. I like it because it's right in the middle of the peak of these runs everywhere - so lots of fish and other crowds of fishers spread out among a lot of rivers. ...
Thanks for the donated prize of a $25 gift certificate at your store Paul (Willierower). BTW, the WA vs OR thing is just a fun side deal for trash talkin this up to get the pumps going. . I envision teams of mixed guys from both states. No sense in making it an actual state vs state thing - it's silly, because everyone knows OR guys are better fishers, plain and simple - since teams will be mixed we should keep an informal count of WA caught fish and OR caught for a little pride comparo (or luck comparo if WA guys get more in their home court advantage rivers). I will match your $25 donation with a $25 gift certificate for STS products (books, mag subscriptions, hats, etc.); and I bet Nick will add another one. Any more prize doners? The more we get the further down the placement list boat teams can get prizes. Dan and Os might get one that way . There will be more boats this time. ...
We should make attempts to place guys without boats in with a team. And we can have a seperate bankfish catagory. If more than one bankie comes in with a 6 fish limit the tie breaker for the prize would be total weight of the 6 fish. ...
And you bet 'Yall, you can have a seat in my boat again. If we can get 'Fly with us we will have the same team we had for Flotilla I - with vengence on our minds! I have a 4th seat open for Jeff or whoever. Keep in mind that 'Fly may want to bring his boat if Pam and Tyler want to come. And if there is a lot of guys wanting boat seats maybe Jeff and I should both bring our sleds? Nahh, to heck with 'em, I want a 'stacked' team. nah, jk ...
The Satsop R. is also a great candidate Dan. Os told me he likes that river too for III - no wonder, you guys have it dialed. But all the rivers will be stuffed with fish anyway. Let's all just put our river picks posted up in the order of preference, to get a consensus of the first option (if it's in shape). Despite having guided on the Clack I still prefer the larger fish limit of the SW Washington rivers; my vote is 1 - Cowlitz 2 - NF Lewis 3 - Satsop/Chehallis. But we need to keep it flexable for a late switch from the consensus river if it's either out of shape or not producing and another one is. ...
Good theme names. Until we consesus in another one, it's "FLOATILLA III - Slay Ride On The Silvers". (or 'hos?). Keep the ideas coming. Thanks guys. - Steve
Edit: Jen, you 2 should have no prob getting a seat in a Floatilla boat. But do you think Julie will come? She seems kind of shy to me? Maybe not.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
I missed one and two, so I'm guesing it's some sot of fishing derby. Is it restricted to IFISH members only? If so, since none of my fishin homies have computers, my driftboat could have 1-2 spots available. My vote is for the N.F. Lewis or Clackamas it doesn't matter to me which it is. Besides the only reason WA could have possibly won b4 is because team OR probably had their tags already full Just keep us posted. Thanks.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
I haven't been involved in this event but I do have a DB and would like to join in the floatilla. I haven't floated the mentioned rivers but maybe I could hook up with someone who has.
If I have to take a washintonian I can set up the rear facing chair in the stern area that comes equipped with a kleenex box and catch bucket for all the crying from watching the real fisherman catch feesh

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
This all sounds like something I would be willing to tow my DB north for, but I wqould be definitely in uncharted waters. The only thing I know about WA is you drive north until it starts smelling bad: Then What? I need someone in the boat that has run the river, and can guide me as I run the oars. I guess we could just tag out at the boat ramp, that would make it simpler.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
julie can ride in my "cadalac" of boats, and as the rock would say, THE RIVER DOESNT MATTER, THE DATE DOESNT MATTER, THE THING THAT MATTERS IS THAT "BOATER" WILL PUT ON SUCH A FISH CATCHING CLINIC THAT "RT" WILL TEAR HIS BOOK UP INTO SMALL PEICES AND STACK THEM UP REAL NEAT AND STICK THEM STRAIGHT UP HIS CANDY *** ...., and after its all said and done, rt will be taking notes from "boater" for his new book titled "BOATER, THE "FOR"REEL TRUTH"

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
You guys don't really think you're going to come up here (yes, Floatilla III is on WA waters ) and school US on catching fish, do you? You'd better bring your A-game with you.
Jeffhead....whaddya think about the 13th so it's not so hard on willierower? That would give us a better chance of moisture to get some fish moving? Or are you more set on the Cow? I'm only thinking the Satsop/Chehalis because then you can show up with a sled, driftboat, or cat and still have a chance to go. The Lewis and Cow are sled shows only, and more seats will be available if we include all craft. We could hit up Schaeffer Park for a get-together and have fishable water right next to the gathering, for the real hard-core guys (or the Orygunners who haven't filled their punches yet ).
Floatilla III: Slaughter on the Water
Let's keep the ball rolling with some alternate ideas, or agreement on plans already offered up. Os and I are feeling pretty confident, even if we do have to drag along a glorified crappie fisherman from Alabama. If you want big, mean silvers.....the Chehalis system is hard to beat. I get the feeling the state record could be broken there this year. Who wants some?

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
"FLOATILLA III - Slaughter On The Water" , it is! (consensus) And it WILL be a slaughter of both fish and fishermen - especially if 'boater' has the nads to show up for a fish spanking. ... Ifishers; bringing your non-ifish buddies is fine. (I will post to piscatorial to get some of them to register here and join in the post/event too. ...
So, do we have it down to the 6th on the Cow or NF or Satsop? Any of the 3 will be great (btw, driftboats do very well on the Cow and NF - better than sleds on the Satsop; but that's still no prob). Lots of other floaters to post in yet. Let's start putting your preference votes in for the "Slaughter On The Water". Fun! And we can meet for pizza and brew at a lot of different candidates nearby any river. - Steve
Edit: Hey Stew bud, how could I forget you and Mark; my fishin bros?!? I guess I had in mind my same Floatilla I team, as we need revenge! We can work something out, including fishing 6 guys in my sled , it'll give our team a better chance at the prizes that way. Or maybe Jeff bringing his sled too and fish the 2 sleds close by. And I'm hoping Jerry S. will bring his sled to this one - he missed the others, and that would provide more seats. Are you reading Jerry? He doesn't have time to read much anymore (new job).

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
TM, you and Scott sing it - we'll bring it. ...
Pretty please keep the date to Oct. 6th; as Jeff mentioned it was picked right after F II. I just found out I have to be in Corvallis for 'Dad's Weekend' for my daughter on the 13th. I don't want to miss another Floatilla! The 6th will have fish happening in a number of rivers, not just the Cow & NF if those aren't putting out - but they will be putting out with 100K fish heading up them! Please - Steve

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Tell you what RT-
I'm in for the 6th if you're in for the Satsop/Chehalis. Yes?
Don't worry about having to go to Father/Daughter weekend and tell them you got schooled by the Oly. crowd again, she'll still love you anyway!

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
OK Danno, if the 'Sop has the water we'll go for the slaughter. It might need some rain where the other 2 won't necessarily? I do like the idea of those big mean hooknosers cruisin up the Satsop! I'm up for anything on the 6th! Even if you guys do get a big home court advantage there, that ain't no big deal to me. We gonna have a goooood time no matter what!!! Who you takin to the 'Sop hop? We can make that the planned river, and change to a Cow standby if it ain't happenin over Monty Way. ...
What do the rest of you guys think?

Slaughter on the Water
I don't know about the fish being in the upper river O'City Fishermen???must be those rivers closer to Orygon ,
but I know that the Satsop will have Kings ,Coho and some Brusier Chums to offer though out the whole river.
Since it's our turn to chose...I pick the Satsop....But I can congratulate Dan on any River
so where ever when ever......I'll be you're Huckleberry ......Os

Actually the lewis would be the place. I'll go anywhere but the lewis is so full of silvers right now, it just makes a guy quiver... Anyhow, in the last 4 trips we've boated almost 50 fish. ITS UNREAL! So, you guys make the call but sleds, driftboats, or cats all are welcome. This river can take all and will come up to 3000 cfs after this weekend. You don't understand when it comes up, slaughter house doesn't even explain it!!!!!!!!
Keith

Sounds great! I would think by Oct. 6th all the candidate rivers are going to be the same way. Yeeeehaaaaw!

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
RT,
Keith is right about the Lewis being hot now, but just about every river should have ho's by the boatload by then. In fact the Satsop/Chehalis should have Kings, Silvers and some early chums by then.
Home court advantage? Heck, I hardly know anything about the Satsop......is it over there by Aberdeen?

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Makes no difference to me...Satsop, Chehalis, Cow, Lewis....don't matter, they should all be packed with fish by then. The date doesn't really matter to me either. I was thinkin' the Lewis or the Cow just so those Orygon boys wouldn't have to go so far to get spanked by the Washington guys!!! I'll go with whatever the majority wants.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
I believe Keith's posts.....I have corresponded with him on other fishing matters............Also, have fished the N. Fk. Lewis in years past and it is a very friendly river ....great sasset for those fisherman that don't have the home court advantage.......... And it will take sleds ands sdrift boats and doe's have some bank access............Fishbait

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Then we can make it on the 6th! Yay! I do have to admit that I personally like the medium sized rivers better than the big ones like the Cow and NF, even as good as those are. And I like the multi fish runs combined in early Oct., including bigger 'hos, on the 'Sop. It has great holes too. I know a few sleds run up from the Hwy. bridge launch a ways. Can they go up far enough to fish a good number of productive holes without getting hit with lead? And is the Chehalis off the mouth good fishing for the sledders? If so, then I suggest making that our primary pick with the NF or Cow as backups if there's no 'Sop hop happening. If not, then we need a lot of committed driftboats to get enough seats available, or opt for the other 2 - but I think the sleds will work; just a separate catagory than the drifters for honor and prizes . It only took me about 2 hours to drive from Cedar Mill, west of Portland, to the lower Satsop R. launch site the day I fished it with 'Fly prior to Floatilla I. And there are campgrounds and inexpensive motels too. ...
More feedback guys ..........

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
i will leave that date open for a fish slaughter.the satsop is pretty iffy at that time especially if we don't get rain.if you include both the satsop and the chehalis,we would be able to get fish, but i vote for the cowlitz.even though i wouldn't mind taking your money scott

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
The date is the important thing to set - the 6th, unless a consensus changes that. The river is secondary to set at this time. We know it will likely be one of the 3 - which ever has the best water and fishing conditions during the week leading into the wekend of the 6th should get the nod. If we get early rains and fish in the 'Sop that would be cool ... we don't want Danno and friends snibblin and whimperin if they don't get the advantage over the OR boys . I prefer being an underdog on unknown waters anyway - that puts the pressure smack on the smack talkers . If the 'Sop doesn't get the rain and early fish, the Cow will be stuffed with fish and ready for action! And plenty of room for boats. We can post a thread vote based on gathered info before or at least by Thur. the 4th for the Oct. 6th event. Yeeehaaaw!

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
scott,
That may be true an any average year, but it won't be too early this year. The Quil got their first big wad of silvers on July 26th, the Quinault is already stacked with silvers, and it looks like they're showing up early all over the place. If there's enough water to float a boat there, there will be fish to slay. Besides that, the Chehalis will be in full swing well before the Floatilla.
These Chehalis fish aren't little girlie-silvers, either. If you want tough, hooknosed, spin-in-your-line, burn your thumb, and send-you-packin'-back-to-momma silvers.........the Chehalis is the system for you.

I agree with the Chehalis system also, those cookie cutter whimpy silver on the Lewis will be almost done by then, sure the 6 fish limit is enviteing but I rather have some reel line screamin action i.e. Satsop fish for sure....well need to be a little fleaxable.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Thanks for the invite Osprey! I might have to pass on the stay at O's Holiday express if the redneck is performing. I most likely will have the 13 year old salmon killing queen with me. She heard about the Slaughter on the water and made sure she was going.
Just how for is the Sop from Kalama? I may need to go up and do a little pre fishing before the big day, If we decide thats the place. Im fishing the Lewis next Monday and I may do something on the Cow here soon also.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Question, for the first timers who will do this event who will decide who goes with who and when would that be decided !
I mentioned I have a DB but have not fished any of the mentioned rivers. A person knowledgable of the river would be a great addition but not necessary.
Does a new thread need to be started to organize the first timers ?
I won't get stuck with one of these Washingtonian fishermen I hope

The Satsop is a piece of cake to float most of the water is very readable,we'll just have to keep track of who has rides and who needs rides ,should be a lot of fun ,those Satsop Kings and such will bruise you're ego..I promise.Tight lines....Os

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
The 6th is great but not so sure about the 'sup. I prefer the Cow or the NF. Sort of in the middle in "no man's land." What do you say spooled are you going? If not the 16' Fish Rite can take 2 more.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
OK, since this is getting real WA vs OR and 'Fly is fishing with team Vision, I will take up Spooled's offer for a ride in his Willie - the terror of Floatilla II - for a contending OR team. I think more Orygone teams are gonna show for this one - bad news for you WAAAAussies. For F-I, I was the only OR rep, and I was only half there, if ya know what I mean . And Os and Redneck were the only Waaa's that showed for F-II and got the 'donut' handed to them. Let's get this thing organized you OR boys. We need some boat teams. Post who has a boat and who needs a ride. Those are WA's heavy hitters so we need a least some of our average fishermen to show up and mop up on their home field . Let's get after it and get these teams together guys - we're playing on the road for this one. Post away .....

Rt surely you can dredge up some ex- Washington fishermen for your side. You know the type...had to move to Oregon to get away from all the good fishing. Tell them they should visit their folks back home.

Re: FLOATILLA III -- Slaughter On The Water
Hey Marty, why do ya think Bob had to move from OR up to WA to guide competitively? To get away from the OR heavy hitters of course. (jk Bob - you are one of the best - and if you come to F III, remember your roots and fish for OR) ...
Directions and "Fair Play":
The Satsop River on Oct. 6th! It's a great river (been written about in former STS issues and was filmed for a Fishing The West coho fishing episode)! It's about 1 hour and 45 minutes from the I-5 bridge over the Columbia if you move right along - allow 2 hours though. The early morning meeting place will be the lower launch by the Hwy. 12 bridge (same as for F-I; you have to cross over the bridge a ways and backtrack to enter the parking lot from the east bound lanes). Coming up from the south on I-5 take the Hwy. 12 exit west (about 5 miles north of Centralia). The 'Sop bridge on H 12 is between Elma and Montesano. We can still use the driftboats if F-III switches over to the Cowlitz or NF, and available sleds can be brought out to replace some of the driftboats for those bigger rivers; but the D-boats still will work well on those rivers - especially with a trolling motor to get back up and recover schools of fish. ... As for F III sportsmanship ettiquet - in any given river section fished let's don't have any lame boat races so 1 or 2 boats get to fish the fresh fish first all the way thru. This AIN'T a boat race. Let's be sporting gents and rotate the lead boats for a fairer and fun day. Despite the fun smack talkin, this is really just for fun and camraderie - and some small nice prizes. Feedback ideas? .....
