Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
I'm looking to have a puller made to mount in my boat. Does anyone around here make them. If so how much $$$$$$
I looked at the one at Stevens marine real nice! But $300.00 bucks is a bit much.
I'm going to check with a local muffler shop to see how much they want to make one. Or if you have plans drawn up do you want to share.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
Seems to me a few feet of galv. water pipe, a threaded Eye bolt, a carabiner, a small pulley and maybe even a used trailer hand crank winch and you could fashion something functional.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
I purchased one at the Sportsman Show made by EZ-Puller(Cushman Boats) out of Hoodsport Washington. Best Davit I have seen for the money. Mine is Schedule 80 aluminum and comes with a heavy duty aluminim pulley and all mounting brackets. Cost was $175.00, but they also had cheaper ones made from schedule 40 I believe.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
Do it right. Go buy some stainless tubing and make it yourself.
It can't be that hard to make. Cut the pieces and hire someone to weld it.
You can get stainless tubing at IRC downtown Portland.
$180.00 seems way too high a price. How many crabs could you buy for that ?
All there is, is a pipe welded together with a pulley. How hard could that be ?
I would pay $50.00 tops.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
I got one of those from Cushman at last years show. It mounts right on my Scotty down rigger mount (I have the swivel mount). They said they have tested it to 285 pounds. It works great and I didn't have to drill any extra holes in the boat. HJ

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
Are you looking for a davit or a power pot puller?
$300 for the pot puller if it has a davit with it is a fair price. $300 for the davit is robery.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
For work, I was involved in a year long study of fish, crab, and bentic community on the mouth of the Quillayute (yeah, tough duty). We leased a sled from Three River's Marine in Woodinville.
The crab study used large commercial pots that weighed 70-80 pounds each. Three Rivers has a standard davit design made out of stainless steel and a mount for a small Honda engine. When you are ready to pull, start the engine and take two wraps on the pulley. Bingo! the big ole traps came right up.
It was probably kind of pricey (I didn't care, the project was paying for it), but real slick.
I have pictures, but I can't load them up here.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
Some tips for those who purchased the davit system from Cushman. Installed mine yesterday (sch. 80, floor base and gunnel mounts) with some improvements.
1. Drill a drain hole in the base plate/pipe.
2. Put UMHW shim in bottom of base plate/pipe, to avoid the alum. on alum. (galling).
3. Weld piece of alum flat bar on arm to mount a jam or regular cleat, to hold rope when swinging pot into boat.
There may be other mods., have to use it to find out.
Hope this helps.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
I would be interested in hearing from someone that has the Cushman Davit that mounts to the Scotty down rigger base. It seems like there would be a lot of leverage applied to the Scotty base when pulling crab pots. I have a Bayliner 2252 hardtop that has two Scotty down rigger bases. Unfortunately I didn’t get the electric down riggers with the boat so I am in the market for those…but alas I digress…Maybe I am a little paranoid but I would be concerned about the fiberglass breaking or cracking from the angular forces being applied to the base. An attachment point at the floor, like a normal install, puts the forces where they should be. With that said, I must say that I like the idea of mounting to the Scotty down rigger base to help keep things a little cleaner. The last thing I need is more hardware mounted inside the boat. If anyone has any experience with the Davit or ideas on how to strengthen the mount point I would love to hear from you. I could easily back the bases with a steel plate but I am not sure that would be enough.
Thanks
Allen

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
I have the Cushman davit that mounts to a Scotty swivel base. I was a bit concerned about the strength, however after extensive testing, I found it to be plenty strong. I have a welded aluminum boat, and I backed the swivel mount with 1/4 aluminum plate for extra strength (cushman strongly recomends you do this) and absolulty no problems. I pull Trilogy sport pots, which are not the heaviest, but I've seen not flex or give in any part of the davit system.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
Bellinghamangler,
Thanks for the post. I am sure your aluminum installation is much stronger than I could ever make my fiberglass mount. I am not sure how much wood backing there is under my down rigger mounts. I suppose I could pull a screw and see how much wood and fiberglass is there for backing but I am not sure what it would take to make me happy anyway. I guess I could back whatever is there with steel and hope for the best…that is unless someone has already been down this route and already knows the outcome.

Re: Does anyone make Crab pot pullers(Davit)
WOW This is one of the reasons I like this site so much.
Great infoamation. It looks like I'm going to go with the Cushman Davit.
Thanks everyone for your help and advice.
