Hang UP & drive Please!!!
Just a tad safety issue.. Why folks drive using cell phone Or multi-task while driving a large Vehicle that can kill & cripple?.
Was behind a P.U. this morning. 6 am, weaving Crossing the yellow.. Reaching for my Cell for DUII arrest. bumps the cubs, Just before the Bridge.. Then drives straight. ( a good Short Wake up BUMP.).. If your IFISHER.. You came close from doing a Chat with the Lawdogs.
Fumbling with SAT radio OR Nav unit on dash board, with Cell phone in hand..
GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
People, STOP that.. pull over.. It's the same as driving drunk while on Phone. EVEN the ear bud version!!!!.
Off my Soap box, back to my cubby hole in the woods!.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
I agree, drive or talk on the phone. Make up your mind, you can't do both at the same time safely. Way worse than being a drunk driver, at least drunks you can take off the road and prosecute for being unsafe fools endangering others.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
I saw someone walking down the street the other day on the phone, so I rolled down my window and yelled "SHUT UP AND WALK!"
They didn't appear nearly as amused as I was.

Make sure you don't talk to people in the car either, or scream at kids, or listen to the radio, or think about something ...

Be ware, if you are cited for speeding while on a cell phone it is prima facia evidence for a citation for careless driving. I just wish more cops would figure this out.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
Well I drive 50k every year(for the last 6 years), my car is my office and I use 3000 cell min each month. My 1 year of driving is equal to 4 years for the average person. I have never been in a wreck and it's been 6 years since my last speeding ticket. I will work and drive all I can.

It's been my experience that most drivers who are talking on their cell phone are not speeding (typically driving well under the speed limit which can be annoying too), and the drivers that are talking on their cell phone and speeding would most likely be speeding if they weren't on their phone anyway.

My whole point in this.. is to keep your eyes on the road.. & not crash or run over that 3 year old. Pain is a good teacher.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
I was cut off twice today because the drivers were on the phone and couldn't use their turn signal. (and this was during a 10 minute drive home) When did everyone become so important that their phone conversations had to be so immediate.
Yes, I do talk and drive but I always pull over if it turns into a conversation...but then again, I hate talking on the phone.
I have never understood why it's a law to wear your seat belt but it's okay to use a phone while driving.

They figured out it is more distracting to be on the phone than talking to somebody in the car because you project yourself out of the vehicle when talking on the phone. It is easier to ignore what is next to you if you have to..

Are you sure this isn't because the people that are not talking on the phone are busy avoiding you?

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
Every driver is an individual. Some can't drive even unhindered by cell phones or radios. Others can out drive most others whil on their cell phone. Treat all as individuals and ticket those that drive recklessly based on thier driving capability at that point in time.
I am confident that I am a better driver while on the phone than many while they are paying close attention to driving. If I am driving as if I am distracted, then pull me over and ticket me big time. Talking on a cell phone while driving is no more difficult than talking to the person in the shotgun seat for me.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
Folks have been distracted into wrecks for years.
I have seen folks eating, drinking, reading newspapers, putting on makeup, fiddling with CD players and other toys, as well as engaging in various other activities not appropriate to mention in this forum.
If we are really serious about cell phones, in order to be consistent, we also need to outlaw entertainment and GPS devices, fast food and drink drive through windows, and cigarette lighters, among other things.
Don't see it happening.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
New Hands Free law in Washington. (Proven to be inaccurate - JCMD)
* Cell Phone Usage While Driving - $285.00 (cell phone usage (until January 1, 2008, you can use a hand held cell phone while driving, but if a police officer observes a driving infraction, he can stop you and cite you for both. After January 1, they can stop you for cell p hone u sage w/o any other cause.)
must now be done with "hands free" device.)
Law Enforcement has been told to really start cracking down on this, as the accident rate is increasing due to cell phone use.
* Cell Phone Usage in a Construction Zone - $570.00 (this fine is doubled from the regular $285.00)

No cell phone while driving and learning to singal when changing lane or doing a turn. Is one of my pet peeves. I don't know how many time these ID10T I see driving make turns or change lane with out using the signal and a few time almost causing accidents.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
If using the phone in the car is so safe I suggest you go take your drivers test all over again. Except this time keep a conversation going with the phone jammed in your ear and the tester in the passenger seat.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
The WA Law is a stupid law. If I'm not holding the phone, I'm driving safely while I talk on the phone. Yeah, right.
Of course, this says nothing about people who will be distracted trying to figure out how to answer their phone with the new "hands free" device.

I commute about 3-4 hours a day and like many of you have seen some pretty dumb things done by other drivers, however I also don't want any extra laws being added to the books. Taking each driver case by case, but get the bad ones off the road.
Like I tell my wife it is no her I worry so much about it is the idiot coming at her that scares the heck out of me.

Washington has a new law/fine increase to cover this also:
* Incorrect Lane Change - $380.00 (not using turn signal or "cutting" someone)
I could be wrong, but I believe that money from fines in Washington go to support the Courts and Police and I believe that in Oregon the money from fines goes into the general fund so there will be no incentive for police to write tickets.
I do know after living in both states that you have to really be doing something wrong to get a ticket in Oregon, But you will get a ticket for just breathing in Washington.

Makes about as much sence as this. Well I drink 50k beers every year while driving. I have never been in a wreck and it's been 6 years since my last dui. I will drink and drive all I want. How did you survive before you got your cell phone?

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
Join the new millenium dude. Distractions happen. Cell phone use is one of many distractions. The best that can be done is to try to make those distractions less of an issue, but removing them is impossible. Now TEXTING while driving- that's a different story. You can't physically look at a screen to text AND be looking at the road unless you have some skillz that I've never witnessed.
I'll continue to use my cellphone in the car until they pry it from my cold dead hand, although hopefully by then, it'll just be implanted in my head somewhere and I can just think at it.

I guess there may be some geniuses who can talk and drive well at the same time. I know I can't and every one studied can't either. So if you are a genuis and you know it for a fact, then carry on your business while you are driving, don't bother pulling over like us lame brains. The rest of us will try to make room for you and your huge brain:

I run hands free in my rig, and feel it safe to talk in some driving situations.
Now, programing the Nav, or watching DVD, I only do when stoped.

Jeez, I find carrying on an intelligent conversation very challenging. It would be rude and unprofessional to talk to someone while engaged in an act of.... driving.

Eating may be top driving distraction

Now stop that eating, and don't talk with your mouth full.
Hands at 10-2 no raido, no gps, no talking to passengers, just look straight ahead.

Eyes everywhere, you should be checking your mirrors and blind spots at least every 10 seconds. Learn to drive, the only things I do while driving is arc welding and brain surgery.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
We are all safe drivers with a phone up to our ear and half of our peripheral vision gone. Probably the reason we think we are such safe drivers with half our vision gone is we cant see or dont know about the wreckage we left behind. If ya dont notice it, it must not be happening or must not have happened. I think cell phone driving laws are a good thing. If you need to be yapping get a hands free device.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
No, your hands are no longer at 10 and 2. Now it is 9 and 3 at the highest. Better at 8 and 4. Airbags are vented at 10 and 2 (stupid engineers) so the burns from the hot gas are causing problems.
And the radio is now touted as a tool to stay awake. Easy to ignore when you need to, but keeps you from fixating when a bit tired.
Driving drowsy, driving impaired, and talking on cell phones cause most wrecks.
That's the other thing. They don't call them accidents anymore. Because 80% of the time they could have been avoided.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
It is a learned thing.
I drive about 45k a year for work. 2000plus minutes a month on the cell.
You get better at it, but it takes practice....like many things in life.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
I too drive everyday for work, day in and day out I see what "practice" and the "learned thing" does or almost does. So my hats off to you exceptional people that are skilled enough to use a cell while driving, but its the other 99% thats gonna bang up my truck, bang up your vehicle or
kill somebody while they are learning and practicing..............

Yep...36K miles a year and over 5000K minutes/mo.
Seems there is one of these threads every few months...I respond...get lambasted for being so unsafe...and life continues.
Yet, I still haven't been in a wreck since I was 16 (over 21 years ago).
I must be one of the few special ones.
Yeah, I see some idiots that shouldnt' be driving and talking on the cell, but I also see more idiots that just shouldn't be driving.
I am, however, ok with the hands free law...just don't outlaw them altogether.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
When I got my license driving meant responsibility. It was stressed that being defensive on the road and paying attention was number one. That all got tossed in the back seat and forgotten. I drive twenty miles to work and twenty miles home everyday and it seems eight out ten people have a phone in their ear. Sure there are a number of folks who have the mental capacity to talk and drive and there are those who don't. Someone can be driving the speed limit then all of a sudden drop their speed by 10MPH because they either got a call or are dialing. They pull out in front of you at an unsafe distance because they are on the phone. They don't pay attention when changing lanes and almost cause accidents. I see it day in and day out it happens and it annoys the living feces out of me. Selfish society we live in now.
The law of natural selection is hard at work but the results are less than satisfying. There are too many safety nets that keep stupid people from killing themselves nowdays and those people keep creating more stupid people that kill others. Look at the guy on 405 in the semi a couple years ago. On the phone and not paying attention. He drives 50MPH into cars and kills a couple people in a big ball of fire. He loses his CDL and that's it. No criminal intent so no harm done say's the DA. Life goes on for the living.
The way society as well as government views things these days makes me want to go live in the woods away from everyone.
Nah, I'm OK. Can't wait for Monday.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
Ok I understand that driving and talking on a cell phone is REALLY BAD, But there is people that can handle it but i totally agree its wrong to drive but going as far as saying its as bad as drinking and driving is a little extreme maybe its just me but thats my thoughts. But i do agree either drive and not talk or talk and dont drive.

Re: Hang UP & drive Please!!!
Let's legalize drunk driving too, lots of people can drink and drive with no problems.
