Default fishin pole angle in rod holders

has anyone ever noticed that when you are trolling and have your fishin pole pointed almost to the back of the boat that you hook more fish this way, i see alot of people that stick there fishin poles straight out the side and lose more fish, i believe that with the pole pointed back further the drag on the reel sets the hook faster than having it sticking straight out the side of the boat. there is that split second that it takes to bend the rod back before the drag sets the hook, but if your pole is almost pointed straight out the back it shrinks that time....

I agree with you on that Boater...Back and level to the water works best for me.....Just our worthless 2 cents worth... huh!!

Let them feel the reel...not the bend. Same thing works at anchor.

I have to disagree with you guys. Between all the charter boats and my own sled,I say straight out the side works for me. My pet theory is that fish move to the side when the boat moves over them. You probably get better action out of your rod having it straight out the back though.

This has got me thinking. I tend to place my shorter heavy action rods out the back with a lighter drag. My lighter action longer rods go out the side with a heavier drag. With the one the reel does the work and with the other the rod does the work. In my case the rod action is the reason they end up off the side or out the back. Mabey its your rod action not the rod placement the getting you more hook ups.

When anchored or backtrolling I always like the rod straight out the back of the boat. This isn't to say you can't catch fish with the rod out the side (obviously you can), but if I have a choice I'll always go off the back. I think this has to do with being confident that your gear is working properly - when I'm going straight out the back of the boat I can always tell if my gear is working the way I want it to, hence more confidence. I find it harder to tell if things are working properly if the rod is off the side.

I guess it really depends on how you are fishing. For some things I don't think it would matter, but, if I'm running kwikfish they are sticking straight out the side of the boat, no exception. It is ten times easier to see how your plug is working with the rod off of the side of the boat.

Wow, good topic Boater, I thought I would never see the day I said that

I've found that rod placement is a very strategic process. The most important step is to first identify which rod holder is opposite of mine - put your rod there immediately- and your guaranteed to catch fish - while i watch and net...

I think in some circumstances all of you are correct. It has been my experience that with silvers, they love the prop wash, and therefore they will tend to hit the rod closest to the wash. The ones I really like are the yellow poles that are straight up with line about fifty to seventy yards behind them!!!

Wow Wetaline!

You must have the same type of rod holders I've got!
