Lower columbia duckhunting question
does anyone know a guy that has a 17-20' open camo sled that hunts the lower columbia. that guy has no respect for other hunters, he flys around in his boat like he owns the river. The night before opening day he just about ran into me with no lights on his boat. A couple of weeks later he went flyin threw mybuddys decoys. I just want someone to let him know he needs to slow down and be safe out there.

Re: Lower columbia duckhunting question
do you have boat type or motor type.
Things to think about out there is sometimes running at night you can see better without lights blinding you. I generally run with a spot light that I sometimes turn off and on. Yes I know the rules about running lights but I also know what is safest for me and others as well as if I can see then they can also.
Secondily if your decoys are out accross the channels and cuts then be prepared for folks running through them or trying to manuver around them. We need to also understand that most boats track better while under way some sort of speed is your friend in boat control when running in tidal influenced areas. You can't block the cuts on the islands bottom line, Yes it is tried to prevent folks from going further up a cut but it is wrong
Opening day it is something we all just have to deal with as it gets crazy out there add the fog to that, add lower water levels where a boat is running with his prop up or even running a jet then they have to be going great speeds for control.
Hope this might help in understanding some of the reasons they may be running. It might not be just inconsideration but that is the safest way for them to run.
Also what island or area?
Just curious if it is me your thinking about.
Marsh Island Main cut big blind day before the opener????????????????
If so we can talk I'd be happy too

Re: Lower columbia duckhunting question
I'm also wondering if it is me? We're were out about 8pm the night before opening day. We didn't see any other boats but you never know. What kind of boat were you in and what type of boat does your buddy have?

Dan, I know we've talked about this before, but for the love of all that's holly, please run with lights. The red/green lights don't throw that much light out. Seriously, think of us poor ol' layout hunters that fear being nothing more than a speed bump because we didn't have time to move when the the unseen boat came bombing up the channel.
Pretty please Dan, with a cherry on top?
Geoff

Yes, please use running lights in the dark. We all must operate under the same set of saftey rules when boating. What you "think" may be safe, following rules only you are aware of will only lead to problems. So, please everyone - use your navigation lights in the dark.

Re: Lower columbia duckhunting question
If this was at the boat launch at about 19:30-20:00 the night before then yes it was me. But I thought they would of seen the 15 million canlepower spotlight we were flashing them with and no I didn't have my lights on as I didn't see it dark enough to have them on. But if that was you in the white fiberglass boat then I am sorry.

We almost got ran over by a 21' North River at 5:30 am on the Sunday after the opener out at the Coast. We had our lights on, he did not. I personally don't want to be sawed in half. Us layout boys are doing our part, please, or as Geoff puts it "Pretty Please with a cherry on top." Heck, I'll add on some chocolate sprinkles if that floats, er...uh... lights your boat?

Re: Lower columbia duckhunting question
I see boats out there running without their navigation lights on all the time. I also see boats anchored up in front of their decoys without their anchor light on. What's the difference. Show yourself or take your chances. It's a two way street.
