What the heck is it?
Found this nailed to a tree in my elk camp south of pilot rock. It has of all things, an aluminum nail!
Anyone care to enlighten me as the purpose of this gizmo?

Re: What the heck is it?
Did you look under it? It looks like some sort of FS or land survey marker.

I agree. I think that's what it is. It was originally flat and intended to be attached/nailed through the two holes, separeately. Someone has removed it, bent the ends and re-mounted the way you found it. Don

about 5-1/2 feet. And nothing written or painted on either side, just those weird scratches. Probably from the mothership. . .

Re: What the heck is it?
There is a hillside were we hunt that was burned about 8 or more years ago. There are a bunch of those markers all over the trees. There are also many that are round, about 1 1/2 inch diameter. We were trying to guess what exactly they are. I was going to call the forest service to see what they were.

Did it spin freely. It looks like it would spin when the wind blows on it.

Re: What the heck is it?
I'm sure OSULogger or one of our other foresters could shed some light on it.
No writing or marking.......rigged w/ an alum nail?? I guess they don't want it to rust or corode....obviously want it to be there a while. Not sure why it rigged that way. As mentioned before, it kinda looks like it shows evidence of being nailed flat at one time. Don't I see a ring from the head of a nail present? Bent that way there is no way it would have a ring like that.
I'd say it was a marker that was removed and tampered with...probably to make people scratch there head.
Sure working.

Re: What the heck is it?
You are all thinking to hard. It is a lantern hanger. The plate is ment to keep the lantern from pushing against the tree in the wind.

Re: What the heck is it?
Thanks Drunk Cowboy. Only two questions.... First, why did you leave it there, and second, whose going to break it to the chipmunks that you hijacked their teeter-totter???
