No meat, but a successful trip to the Heppner Unit
My 18-year old son and I went on the Heppner/Ukiah spike only hunt, and even though we didn't bring any meat home, we had a great hunt!
We hunted the area north of 53, and west of 395. Saturday evening we jumped a herd of about 25-30, which had a couple of small rag horns, but we couldn't pick out any spikes. Sunday was a little slow, but today he walked up on a 6X6 at about 30 yards, and they just gave each other the evil eye for 30 seconds or so, before the bull just kind of wandered away, but Stephen was PUMPED!!! We got into another small group of 4-5 this evening, but only saw brown behinds at about 70 yards as they headed over the ridge. Certainly got the blood pumping though! Saw some nice mulies as well; one 4X4 at about 80 yards just stood there with 5-6 of his girlfriends, we swear we could hear him laughing at us!
Stephen had a shot at one yote today, but missed him.
Didn't see a lot hanging in any of the camps we drove by, and I was surprised that there weren't more people out for the general season tags. The weather wasn't real cooperative, but we had a great time being together before heads back off to college tomorrow.

Re: No meat, but a successful trip to the Heppner Unit
I bet that bull encounter was quite an eye opener for him. The weather sure hasn't been cooperative. Sunday afternoon I took a long drive along 2104, 2105 towards Potomaus Point road, then out to the 53. Then towards Ukiah, down Sugarbowl Ridge road, back out and back towards Heppner. I just wanted to see how many hunters there were and where they were.
Out of maybe 50 camps, I didn't see one elk hanging.:frown:
Funny story, the only elk we saw was about noon on Sat. We were talkin with an OSP guy for about 5 mins just out of my buddies camp, and all of a sudden he says, ummm, you guys might want to get your guns out. Here comes 6 cows/calves out of the trees heading right at us. They didn't veer off until my buddy got out and reached for his rifle. One of the craziest things we've all seen.
My trip seems to confirm something I heard earlier, the elk are still high. And to me, it seems there are around 40% less hunters than normal.

Great story thanks for sharing. It's always cool to see those big bulls even if you can't shoot them. :frown:
Always loved that Heppner/Ukiah area, just great animal out there.

That sounds like a good trip to me too. Anytime you see elk it's worth it, even if they have the wrong # of points.
What?!.... no Friction Fire Video to share with us??
I totally forgot about trying when we were out on our hunt. Too busy looking for short horn I guess.

Enjoy these times together. They get harder and harder to make happen as you both grow older.
I'm glad you two had a good time.

Sounds like you guys had a great hunt. The memories will last longer than any meat you would have harvested. Thanks for sharing.
