Hyundai Vehicles?
I am considering buying a NEW Hyundai small SUV but have no experience with Hyundai cars. I am looking at a new one, so if anyone has any pros or cons about Hyundais in general, I sure would like to hear from you.
Thanks in advance,
Rusty

Re: Hyundai Vehicles?
My daughter drove a Hyundai for 4 years (Sonata)...she bought it used and she drives about 35 miles one way to work. She didnt have any problems for those years until she had transmission problems after 4 years. She traded it in for a Elantra this year. Got a good deal on her trade in and she loves the new car. Didn't cost that much comparatively. I would say its like the Hondas were when they first came out...dependable, quality for small price. Elantra gets nice gas mileage.

Re: Hyundai Vehicles?
i have never owned a hyundai but as a mechanic i can give you my professional opinion. hyundais are poorly made, more expensive to repair generally, usually have to wait on parts because few places stock more than the basic parts and they dont seem to hold up much past 100k miles. for some reason the cars seem to hold up FAIRLY well for 100k miles then they just seem to hit a wall and fall apart rapidly. a week ago i worked on a hyundai that needed a mass air flow sensor. had it been a buick, would have been approx a 100.00 part and would have been in stock in most places, being a hyundai, had to wait two days and it was just shy of 400.00. thats just one of many examples. i have found that kias are even worse. stick with honda or toyota, youll pay a little more up front, but it will be cheaper in the long run.

As a mechanic what is your take on Saturn, Nissan and Toyota (specifically the 4Runner)?
I drive a Nissan XTerra and so far I am pleased with it's reliability but I am still under 100k miles with it. I think my next vehicle will be a Toyota 4Runner unless I find out something really bad about them. They seem to hold up well over time from everything I have heard.

Re: Hyundai Vehicles?
the nissans arent too bad. they seem to hold up pretty well but have fairly expensive parts compared to honda and toyota. i have not had to do any major repairs on any xterras. toyota 4 runners are great rigs. the only reoccurring weakness ive seen in any of the 4 runners is the automatic transmission, and they are not cheap to rebuild. i have one customer that has a 2000 4 runner automatic with 330,000 miles on it and its never had anything but routine maintenance. perhaps its just luck of the draw? i am strongly considering my next vehicle purchase to be a 4 runner if that tells you anything.

That tells me exactly what I want to know. Thank you much for the info, it certainly helps. I am pretty certain now that will be my next vehicle when I hit 90K on my XTerra.
I have a full warranty on everything on it until 100K miles so I want to get rid of it before the warranty runs out but I want to drive it right up until then if at all possible.

Corn bread. I just traded my 2001 XTERRA for a 2007 4runner.
Can you say night and day? I loved my Nissan but the Toyota is far superior in every area. I bought the Sports Edition V8 4x4.
I travel a lot for work, rent a lot of vehicles, and can say the quality of the truck has never been close close to being approached by any others. It just feels so solid when you drive it.
Sorry for the Hijacked thread

Reminds me of one of Jay Lenos shows a few years ago. He said something like this: Why did Hyundai put rear window defrosters on their cars? So your hands don't get cold when you push them in the winter.

Re: Hyundai Vehicles?
We had a Elentra for 5 years and put over 100,000 miles on it. It was a 1998 and I had not one issue with the car. I had a 5 speed and for what it was it had plenty of pep in it.
The warranty is something you have to look at 10 year warranty.

What do you find on the last four pages of a Hyundai owner's manual?
The bus schedules.
What do you call Hyundai shock absorbers?
Passengers.
But seriously, folks, IMHO Hyundais are OK cars. They're not Toyotas or Hondas, but fairly solid, reliable point A to point B transpo.
If I needed a cheaper new car to drive the snot out of for a few years with minimal maintenance, I'd think about buying one. I wouldn't expect 200K miles out of one, though.

Re: Hyundai Vehicles?
Disposable vehicle. I would not have one in my driveway. Based on my days in the insurance business. They were often totalled and most of my clients would never buy a second one.
Not the same with Honda or Toyota.

Re: Hyundai Vehicles?
My wife has a Santa Fe and wishes she didn't. It's always going in for service and it's an uncomfortable ride. I won't drive or ride in it unless I've got no other choice. Gas mileage isn't even close to what they claimed, either. Booo.

Re: Hyundai Vehicles?
Shopped up a cheap car for the kids to drive to the community college. Ended up with a fleet surplus chevy. Nice car, cheap, 2.2L aluminum block and heads, great ride and mileage. Enough sheet metal for crumpleing up by new drivers.
