Elk Scouting Today (video added)
Well went up to do a little scouting for elk season next weekend. What a great surprise this morning when I went right where I wanted to be and found a nice bull out in the middle of a clearcut. Then a few minutes later busted a herd of about 25 head that had at least 3 bulls in it. I'm way excited about next Saturday. Hope to find that big bull again. He looked to be a decent 5 point, or small 6 point. Hard to tell from 4-500 yards.
Here is video from today's trip. Sorry about the shakiness. I had it at 30x zoom. Hard to keep still at that kind of zoom.

Re: Elk Scouting Today
So fishinpox, In your best opinion do you believe that some of these decent larger bulls stay residential or migrate with the herd in a several mile loop type situation, we seen some during the first part of deer season when the weather was ideal for the elk, but not much sign since the weather got so nice. Just gathering ideas for the same reason, unfortunately not able to scout much.

Nice
Looked to me as though that bull was a small 6 on the right side, but maybe you can get a better pic for us next weekend? Good luck!

I really don't know. This will be my first year rifle hunting the general season for elk. I usually archery hunt. I just went back into an area we used to hunt. I was very pleased with the amount of sign I saw. Hope I can come across that guy Saturday morning.

Re: Elk Scouting Today (video added)
Looks like a nice bull.
Would you mind telling about how far he was from the herd? In my area the bulls split off from the cows and spikes and hide in a hole somewhere. The challenge is always trying to find the hole. I like to try and figure how far from the herd they hide.
Also do you think the bit of pressure you applied will move them out of there?
I tend not to scout much real close to season to avoid pushing them into hiding, or the next drainage.

Re: Elk Scouting Today (video added)
He was probably about a mile from where I found the herd. I'm guessing that finding him on Saturday won't be quite so easy. The area has some good timber and what not that he can probably try to hide out in.
Oh and the GPS coordinates are 125.02x44.67. Let me know how the Tuna fishing is while ur looking for him, lol.

Re: Elk Scouting Today (video added)
You know in the past scouting has always been easy for me{finding elk anyways. bow season} But come opening morning either everyone else had found "my herd" or pushed "my herd" out. Very frustrating for me to say the least.
I really am looking forward to being able to hunt blocks of time in the next few years when my business is less reliant on be being there and payed off {come on march}
I wish you the best of luck. I would study the maps and try to figure where they might go if and when they are pushed. But as they say the elk are where you find them.
