read about this happening in a book. Its very rare to have a charcoal deer, about twice as rare as an albino. Its the same genetic defect that causes albinism, only in the opposite direction. There is so much pigment in the deer that it's black, as opposed to a lack of pigment which makes the deer an albino.

It's called melanism.
Melanism is an increased amount of black or nearly black pigmentation (as of skin, feathers, or hair) of an organism, resulting from the presence of melanin.

My dad and I saw a Mule Deer in Oregon that was just that black. It was still in the velvet and it's antlers were also black. We were told it's even more rare than albino, but is the reverse trait that causes albinism. Very cool
