Default Silverfish report, Newport, Wed, 10/31

Siloverfish went out with Chovy, Beefcake, FisherJack and me as crew. Nice morning, bar restricted to 16 and under, so we dropped 5 crab pots in the mid-bay and went out and south to the mouth of the Alsea. Jack caught a nice fat 38 nch chinook within the first hour, so we were primed and ready for more. Alas, the only other fish we got was a black rockfish which went in the half-tote and one sculpin which went back down. The morning was very nice, but about 1 something the wind switched directions and came from the north, consistently too instead of variable. Wind started picking up and the fishing had slowed, so we started back north. Slow going in the sloppy chop or was it choppy slop, but after about a mile we saw birds working and fished the area a bit. Got one additional black rockfish and it got so choppy the lines were popping out of the downrigger clips, so we packed it in and went back to YB to get the crab pots. Only 1 keeper crab.

We fished bait all day, trolling, some whole herring rigged commercial style and some plug-cut herring.

Good crew, good company, nice day, got our salt fix. Definitely made the trip enjoyable and worthwhile. Ocean salmon season is now officially over, hoping next year is much better for all of us for salmon.

Today was trip #47 for Silverfish for this year, most were ocean trips, probably less than a half-dozen or so were only in the bay. I know I'm lucky to be able to get out that much, but it only increases the salt addiction. Now I get really severe complications when I can't get out for a week or ten days. This winter is gonna be tough, don't know how I'm going to deal with withdrawal, I afraid I'll become even more bear-like and unbearable!

Rockfish and lings in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, and March when the ocean allows! Then salmon season opens again and I can hope for good weather and plentiful salmon next season.

Nice report Ron. I was wondering how you were doing while I was at work today. Great day, very little wind, blue skys and I was cooped up in the office. I am glad you made it out.

Maybe when I retire I can escape and get out more often. I have ten months to go, but, I am not counting. I should be a free man by June of 2008 and my schedule will be alot more flexable. See you out there.

Work must have been extra tough this year, I don't think I heard you on the radio any this year. Usually it's at least a couple of times. Next year will be better, retirement has an extremely positive effect on fishing time!

Thanks again for the ride, Ron. That's my kind of "Trick-or-treat" day! Here's FisherJack's prize:

Great report Ron, if it was spook night I might have applied. Probably a good thing Jack caught that fish, at least you know he wasn't going to have to net it

Ron

The fishing wasn't great but I think all had a good time. Thanks for inviting me along.

Ok - I netted that fish - twice to be exact! Who said fish couldn't swim backwards? I'm sure glad that one didn't get away after I said I knew how to net fish!

It was a good time, Ron, as always. Thanks. There is something special about being out on the ocean, no matter whether the fishing is great or not. That salt has gotten into my blood.

I do wish we could have picked up a few more chinook, as they are so much fun to play and good to eat, but that's the way it goes. It was also nice to meet and fish with you Beefcake and Chovy. Hopefully our paths will cross again one of these days.
