Who's all headed to Heppner for 2nd season?

I'll be up there this weekend and then back up Wed night through closing. The weather looks unfortunate. Pretty mild forecast all week so far. I'd prefer to see temps in the teens for this time of year.

And to worsen the mild weather, I think there's only 20 spikes left.

So if any 1st season guys would care to share any elk sightings, feel free.

I plan on working the breaks this weekend, then decide where to head after that, if needed.

Hunted N. Fork J.D. around Bone Mt. area. No cows in the area only a few young bulls. Largest I saw harvested was a small 4x4. Good numbers of deer(some massive racks), grouse, quail and turkey. Few elk. The hunters with elk were the old timers who found a crossing up on top and let the young guys push the elk to them.After the first day and half the most of the shooting was over. Found a spike first thing Friday a.m. that had been shot the evening before. The night before a group shot a fork (yeah) and this spike. He went over the edge and was hard to find. They were on him before I cleared the ridge and took care of him. Forest Service showed up at camp and told us in 5 years he has never seen a cow come from the area. Say's the cows head for Ritter after the rut. Based on the lack of fresh sign I would agree. Might be a great place to hunt during archery season. So much for hair tags! Maybe next year. Chris

I will be accross the street (hwy 395) in the Ukiah unit....up hwy 244, find me I'll buy ya a beer :grin:.

The temps are going to be a little mild, oh well.....we still will have fun.

up 244..eeek.. that is a lot of ground. We used to hunt the ridge south of pearson creek. Camp was a bit west of McClellan Springs - wore out a couple pair of boots there. I can't recall the BLM road.. 5427 ?

Rod, you're walking distance!! I'll be right over. And even though it'll be unseasonably warm, we'll all enjoy the time in the woods. With hope right around the corner.

No weather makes the second season rifle hunt very hard in Heppner.. Good luck and enjoy your time in elk camp.

Pearson creek is off 5427 as well as some other BLM roads, it is very close to where I will be.
