Default What a hunt, big blacktail down...

A friend of mine and I decided to try and fill his rifle tag this morning and things worked out for us....

It was one of the wierdest hunts I've ever seen. We went with the intention of killing the first legal buck we saw but things went a little in our favor. We arrived at the monster clear cut we wanted to glass at first light at 6:30 so it was well before daylight. We parked the truck back about 100 yards and sat in the pure darkness BS'ing about the day to come... Getting restless at about 6:50 we decided to get out and get our Orange on and make our way up to the edge of the clearcut to see if we could hear any deer working below. As we stood there and the light came upon us we heard some sticks break behind us about 150 yards up in the timber. We held our ground as the animal approched. At the time "it" came within 60 yards or so of us and then turned down the back side of the hump in the timber and was headed straight for my truck... As we sat and listened it turned back our way and was closing the distance at a quick walking speed breaking a branch about every 3-4 feet... I threw my binos up as I could see about 60 yards into the timber only to see this big rack coming up over the hill, and I whispered "big buck headed our way"to Craig who was right next to me... We held as still as possible as he was walking right towards us. The buck finally turned broadside at 22 yards and that's when Craig pulled the trigger (In the mean time I'm still watching this through my Leupold 10x50's for whatever reason) I could see the shockwave of the bullet hitting the animal... He reared up like a horse, spun around and ran about 15 feet and face planted like a lawn dart... WOW was what I yelled as the buck hit the ground.... We quickly closed ground on him and high fived at his final breath....

What a hunt....

He's a 3x4 with double eyeguards and measures 17.5" inside to inside, 19.25" outside to outside and 14" tall... Meat and bones (no head no hide) he was 152# on the scale at the meat cutter, the 3rd biggest I've ever seen...

Yeah it doesn't get much harder than this....

Check out the neck on that bugger.. For those that don't think they're rutting yet might want to think again. This dude was working the timber hard..... Just a little to hard I guess...

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but why the comment about brown ferns? Does this mean the timber companies are spraying? Why do they spray? What does it hurt?

Very nice buck, congrats to the hunter!

Just goes to show when you don't try too hard good things can happen. I spent 6 days (and 20+ miles on foot) muzzle loading in the same area and our party had 2 chances at some trophy blacktails but didn't capitalize on any of them.

Then to go up one day for my buddys rifle tag and to have this one walk right up to us just puzzles me... It just goes to show you that you never know where and when it will happen but to be ready at all times.

In a million years I'd never had thought something like this would happen...

Brown ferns???.......C'mon people, ferns die in the fall. We do spray in the fall, but mainly for blackberries, maple clumps, etc. It doesn't hurt the deer, actually, they prefer clearcuts that have been sprayed.

Is this Craig's first deer? It was nice of you to guide him to the "Honey Hole". I'm sure he's hooked on hunting now forever!!

West Klickitat Unit, this buck was actually killed in the Willard area. One of my favorites up there. The density of the area houses some real hosers...

Heck yeah I've been on the Lewis lately, I'm always fishing the Lewis...
