Default Cut it out!

In the paper this morning is a chart from Tom Roster showing effective loads and distances for various shotshells.

The story with it is important, for sure, but this is the only chance you'll have at that chart unless you go through one of the CONSEP courses next year (no more scheduled this year).

It's copy righted, which means it cannot be reproduced in way without his written permission...that means photocopying it here, too, by the way. Please don't get yourselves or Ifish in trouble.

It's pretty interesting information for myself and others not as well-versed or immersed in ballistics as many of you are.

There's a clear warning as well to all of us to do everything possible to curb our (collective, not specific to anyone...I, however, am occasionally guilty myself) over-optimistic shooting, especially at public areas where we're easily seen by not only the rest of the public, but by anti-hunters.

Thanks for the ear.

Oregonian...

Thanks Baltz...meant to add that I had that tip, too, but there wasn't room to run it in the paper, so I'll get it in next week...

Great article and chart. No substitute for some pre-season time at the range.

Yes, and some states have it printed right IN their Bird Hunting Regs.

I just got back from a hunting trip to N. Dakota and their PLOTS (Private Lands Open to Sportmen) Book=Bird Regs has it printed right in their Reg book.

Thanks for posting the notice Bill. There is actually lots of information available on the internet covering the issue of shotgun load effectiveness.

For anyone that might not be able to grab a paper today a simple google search will yield many articles and a few good graphics too. Delta Waterfowl has a good database that compares over 500 types of shot shells and their effectiveness at various ranges.

delta's data seems bias to me. under 40yds with 3's and 4's in steel shot passes where faster 2's fail

It looks like the 2's were tested at slightly farther ranges than the 4's in most of the cases but your point is noted. I doubt that any comparison is truly "scientific" and without some bias but the point is still the same. Pattern your shotgun with various loads and at various ranges to see what is effective in individual circumstances. All the comparisons and charts can do is give us a general guideline regarding what "should" work when considered on an average.
