Default Sunday Newport Crab/fish report

Spent a sunny and lovely Sunday at Newport with my daughter. We crabbed too high in the bay and only managed 3 hard brine spiders.

After the initial set and check I wandered out to the tips and kept right on going. The ocean was a little stirred up with a SW breeze. The bottomfish reefs were got to by plowing right into it. Once I got close there was a huge cloud of gulls and pelicans.

We stopped to drift and hooked double after double. What great fun! A nice 26" ling and a pile of black rockfish.

I had forgotten how much fun the nearshore is. I'll be back.

Bill, I'll be down there off and on all winter. Where is your boat? Mine's in South beach, a mile from the ramp.

I'll let you know the next time I think about crab. A couple weeks I think.

BTW Yaquina bay crabs are picked pretty hard, lots of crab a 16th inch under gage.

Glad ya had a good day, and yes, rockfish are fun to catch! When they are feeding (as indicated by birds), the action is fast! I also like eating them.

Did you troll for salmon even for a short time? On our last trip (Oct. 13), we trolled for salmon and caught about 10 rockfish while trolling for salmon. seems like every time we went by working birds, it was rockfish we got, not salmon.

I also haven't had good luck for crab, but of course some days are better than others. On nice days, esp. weekend days, there are sure lots of buoys in the bay and lots of boats working the pots/traps.

I'm planning on going on Wed., I sure hope the ocean (and the CG!) will let me outside! The forecast is a bit marginal, but I think there's a pretty good chance I'll get outside.

We were mooching with herring. The only time I actually hit bottom it was ling on.

To be truthful I was hoping for a little salmon action. But once I saw the bird boil we abandoned plans to beat our way south to seal rock. If I had to guess I'd say we got maybe a mile south of the tips.

Some of my best days have been between the Soth Jetty and Seal Rock. Really easy on the gas tank too.

I agree 100% John. Some of my most peaceful productive days were bottom fishing. Plus it's a low cost fast ride out & in!!
