Default Backtrolling spin n glos

I know this is a good technique to catch fish. I have caught fish backtrooling spin n glos and sand shrimp. But, does the leader length from diver to spin n glo matter? Once I fished a hookless black mag hot n tots with 5 ft leader to spin n glo. I know another person that likes to fish single hook colored hot n tots with a 3 ft leader. Does it matter?
