Re: Steelhead In the COw
I don't know if I believe this post. How can you net a steelhead with a smelt net. Also I don't think a steelhead would just let you net it, they would have seen the net and spooked off and if you are netting out in the water time after time a steelhead won't stay there or come in to lay there. I need more evidence to believe this post did you take a picture?

Re: Steelhead In the COw
I have seen it happen. The Asian lady had a real hard time understanding she had to release it. That water can get real cloudy and the fish can't see the net at night.

Re: Steelhead In the COw
How could anyone possibly ever exagerate even a little about his fishing?
We NEVER do that, do we?
(It could have happened, however. I have seen stranger things....like a fish jumping out of the water, directly into a boat.)

Re: Steelhead In the COw
I have seen it happen twice. Once on the Cow a few years back by a close friend, then last year, at night, on the Sandy by a stranger.
There are sure alot of sceptical people around here

Re: Steelhead In the COw
May as well throw this in the pot.....I actaully caught a hen steelhead in the upper Puyallup with my bare hands as it tried to negotiate some awful skinny water. For real guys, for real. Was along time ago.....to be sure

Watched my Dad net about a 10 lb steelie while smelt dipping on the Cow several years ago.Look at the water conditions, most steelhead hang close to the bank in high muddy water.Happens more often than 1 might think.

Re: Steelhead In the COw
For what its worth, I netted an 18" rainbow trout out of Cayuga lake in NY. I was so excited that I was yelling to my dad. He looked at it and said "good job, now toss it back", he then explained the fishing codes to me and I did as I was told (reluctantly) not more than 10 min later 3 game wardens came asking who had caught the trout. I said "I did and my dad made me toss it back in front of all of the other fishermen." As far as I'm concerned odds are hat its gonna happen more often than one would think possible.

Re: Steelhead In the COw
I've never seen it first hand but have heard "stories" of it happening. It certainly is feasable, the net is big enough.

Re: Steelhead In the COw
I have also heard about this happening! Since it swam out of his net it's doubtful he got a picture of it. Seems as though I hear about this happening at least a couple times a year. The other day, I was dipping, and hoping I might net one so I could remember what they look like.

Where's Osprey when you need him? Long gone from ifish it seems. I believe he has a relevant story.
