Synthetic Rifle Stock
I'm thinking about changing out the stock on my Ruger M77 Mark II. I want to pick up a black syntetic stock for it. What companies would you guys recommend? Which ones should I stay away from? I want something that's going to be quick and easy to switch out. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Synthetic Rifle Stock
Stay away from MPI had one of their stocks it was a pure pile of trouble. Stay away from injection molded tupperware stocks.

Re: Synthetic Rifle Stock
I recently switched out a wood stock on my old Ruger 300WM with one of those injection molded bell and carlson stocks. Not as fancy as some alternatives but heh, what can I say? Inexpensive and functional. Did splurge for a camo version - looks kind of cool.

Re: Synthetic Rifle Stock
I have replaced stocks on 4 of my rifles with Hogue over-molded models. They offer a full aluminum bed and pillar bed models. I absolutely love them. They are rubber over-molded so are great to grip in wet weather.

Re: Synthetic Rifle Stock
I have the M77 MKII in 300 win mag. I mounted it in a Hogue overmolded stock with the full aluminum bedding block.
Negatives: It was a pain to sand away the rubber coating to float the barrel. The stock is quite heavy. The forearm of the stock was a bit flimsy.
Positives: I like the feel of the stock. Fit was pretty good. The recoil pad was nice and soft.

They seem to be the least expensive, but we know what that means sometimes. What about the Bell & Carlsons?

Re: Synthetic Rifle Stock
Ram Lines and B&C's would be the tupperware stickfish was referring to. I'd avoid any "drop in" stock unless you've got plans to glass bed it yourself.
I've got an MPI that is 20 years old and has held up through a lot of abuse. It's a gunsmith's stock, not a hobbyists, as the things don't arrive ready to use. I like the fact that they're hand laid glass (light and tough)- but the (second) one I bought to use on a project was also a headache and is still sitting on a shelf 5 years later.
McMillin/McBros and HS precision are both very good stocks. If you don't mind working with fiberglass and have some extra time and patience the MPI is a decent stock.
regards, aw

Re: Synthetic Rifle Stock
I second the opinions on Ram-Line and Bell & Carlson. You have to install pillars for them to be worth a crap, but they are cheap. Usually half the price of H-S Precision or McMillan. You do get what you pay for though. Buy an H-S or McMillan, and all you might ever have to do is repaint it.

Re: Synthetic Rifle Stock
We have use McMillain with great success. I believe they have also expanded in their production so the wait isnt so bad anymore. There is a guy here in pendelton that moved here from the valley somewhere that makes one heck of a synthetic stock. here it is http://home.earthlink.net/~oregunsmithing/.
good luck!

Re: Synthetic Rifle Stock
I put an HS on my 700 Rem BDL. Dropped right in and i was also able to use my old Kwik Klip system with it. Was pretty expensive and I ordered it straight the factory. Even with the HS there were options(and not just color),bedding, block, pad, length of pull, etc. etc. Before i ordered, the person I talked to at their site was very helpful with info. Even advised me that one of their options was not worth it and it added an additional 1/2lb to the stock. anyway, i am happy with the HS stock.
