Bad gas
No it isn't the chicken chimichanga ...
Looks like I have about 5-gallons of less-than-useful old GASOLINE. Even better it's mixed 50:1 with oil.
Can anyone tell me the proper method for disposing of it? Seriously! (Portland area) Last time I got rid of some, it wasn't exactly the tree-huggerly thing to do ... if ya know what I mean.

Re: Bad gas
I would not recomend dumping it in the ground, especially since it has an oil mixture. The petrolium components will stay in the soil MUCH longer than you think. And, it doesn't take much gas/oil in the soil to contaminate a large area.
I would take it to the nearest landfill as most landfills now have hazardous materials stations that will gladly accept your old gas....probably free of charge too.

Re: Bad gas
Fast oil change places will take used oil for no fee. I'm not sure about mixed with bad gas.
Metro has a hazardous materials recycling facility and takes bad stuff. Don't know if there's a charge for it.

Re: Bad gas
I have used it in lawnmowers. It smokes a little more than usual. Better yet, I have stuck in my vehicle with good success. It doesn't smoke anymore than usual.

Re: Bad gas
I went the lawnmower route as well. You may want to add a bit of that fuel stabilizer, but before you do, if you have a way to do it, you may also want to pour off the first 4 gallons or so, use that for the lawnmower, and then try and separate the water from the remaining gallon before combining it with the first 4 gallons, and the fuel additive. It is really very easy to do, plus you insure that the gas is not dumped anywhere.

Re: Bad gas
If it's not too . . . eeww. . . bad, pour it into you car's gas tank about a gallon per tank full.
The idea I like best was to call recycling or the city/county. They'll know where you can dispose of it.
Then go hug a tree.

Re: Bad gas
like I said, makes great weed killer; granted you don't use the entire 5 gallons on one particular weed, and preferrably not near a stream. It evaporates, people. We're talking 5 gallons, not 5,000.
Killing those weeds, saves those trees you hug, too.

Re: Bad gas
Try burning it or, do you have any neighbors that you don't get along with. Really though, I have taken mine to the hazmat station at Metro South Station.

Re: Bad gas
Yeah, an old neighbor of mine swore by it for blackberry eradication. Alas, there IS a stream right behind my back yard ... and I just don't care for handling gas and toxics much more than I have to.
Lawnmower and autos have enough trouble without me sneaking known crappy gas into their systems ! Wish I still had that old Datsun truck, it woulda slurped it right up and asked for more! "We don't need no stinkin' catalytic converter!"
I will check out the Metro solid waste complex in Oregon City - - but I want to keep my gas can! I'll let you know what I learn. Thanks for the responses. Go fish.

Re: Bad gas
Phish_on,
The Oregon City Metro Waste Recycling will take your gas. I took a batch of old gas there a year ago. You can retreive your can if you'll wait while they dump it. There is a charge for all drop-offs. Cash only.

Re: Bad gas
chuck 'n' duck had a very good question. How
long can a mixture of gas and oil sit before it goes bad? I was told by a salesperson from a local boat dealer that it will last about three months. It was suggested that you can "dilute" by refreshing it with a new addition of gas and oil as long as it was a small amount to begin with. Does this sound about right?
When should you add the gas stabilizer?

Re: Bad gas
add the stabilizer as soon as you know its going to be sitting for a long time, it does no good to add it after the gas is bad.

Re: Bad gas
Give it to BOE,
He can put it in his boat and leave a hose hanging out of it and then when those theiving b@$tards come to siphon it off they'll get to wrench on their rig as an "added" bonus .
Sorry Roy, couldn't resist.

Re: Bad gas
Yes, use a fuel stabilizer. I've used a product called STA-BIL for years with both 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines. I've had treated gasoline (and mix) in the tank all winter (lawn mower, chain saw, etc.) and they start right up in the spring.
I prefer occasional winter start-up's and warm-up's when (and if) I get a mild day (more of those here than when I lived in Indiana).
Without a fuel stabilizer, I'm doing the Berryman's Chem Tool (spray cleaner) and carburetor kit routine.
