Default I am Looking for a new job

I have a BS in business/Econ and a Masters in Teaching. I am getting tired of dealing with apethetic kids and parents that don't care. Also the inefficiency at public schools combined with the unions and their need to make everyone equal are driving me nuts.

I have been teaching for 5 years and have 3 years management experience prior to that.

If you know of anything let me know so I can apply. Wanted to let you ifishers know so you can get a referral bonus if hired.

Thanks for the help

Is there a particular area you want to work or will anywhere is WA, OR, ID, CA and AK be okay? Ifish is nearly nationwide these days!

I know the steel mill is hiring in McMinville but if you dont like unions you may have an issue.

I went from the private sector to teaching thinking I would be one of those make a difference people. Instead I found the red tape and politics kills anything productive.

I work 20% more than most of my friends from college and make about 40% less. since I also coach I don't get summers off since I am working 4 days a week. granted it is fun work but for no pay.

The teachers that I work with that are happy are also the ones that just pull from the file what they did last year and make no effort to make things relevant for the kids.

Where are you and what would you be qualified to teach? I currently teach marketing and accounting. I can recommend you for it if you want. PM me for more info.

I would like to stay in the Hillsboro, Beaverton, Portland area. I live towards Scappoose so am limited in the commute.

Wife and I just had a house built. I would be willing to move but my wife likes it here and our family is all close which is a nice luxury.

Anything you hear let me know.

There was a Alt Ed SS job in Keizer.....at Clagget Creek MS........I have taught both 7th and 8th grade SS for about 15 months.........done student teaching for MS....did a work sample for MS...........

So I apply.......at one point I was the ONLY candidate they were interested in........then they look at my license......it says Secondary Social Studies 7-12 High School.

Because they are a Title 1 school, I did not meet the "highly qualified" requirement b/c my license doesnt say middle school on it......for get that Ive got all kinds of MS experience.....forget that my license says 7-12.........
forget the fact that I can teach circles around the average "similarly experienced" teacher........they CANT hire me b/c of NCLB.
What a great act.........should be called All Children Left Behind........

Neil(if thats your name),I need to tell you a story.
I'm now 60,my son is now 31.He is a graduate of Scappoose Hi.
When he was in his early Senior year,I found out that he was not going to graduate with his class.
He had dropped a lit class as a freshman.I told him at the time that he would need to make that up to graduate.
Being the young little snot that he was--he --blew it off.
Now it hit home that he was responsible.
Scappoose Hi let him get the missing credit for emptying the garbage cans in the lunch room--he would graduate with his class.
I WENT ******* BALISTIC!!!!!!!
Our school system sucks.
They let him graduate in spite of my very loud protest.
My son has said that I was to hard on him as he grew up. I made him work for what he got. He worked hard and I paid him. He got values.
After graduation(big joke) he voluntered for the Marine Corp.
Scared the hell out of me.
We were lucky, there was no conflict at the time.--96.
Today he is a Para-Medic in the Kirkland Wa Fire Dept.
He even a couple of years ago, accused me of being to hard on him as he grew up. It may be a few more years until he rethinks that.
Neil I salute you for trying to help our lousy school system.
If it may help, I think my son may be a good speaker for a class.I would never commit him without talking to him first--but would if it could help.
As a side bar, I fish the ocean out of ilwco and would be more than happy to take you out during the summer.Your trip as teacher and guider of our youth would always be on me.

that is a good story with a good outcome. Sounds like you son turned out to be a good man and probably better appreciates what you did for him while younger.

I have fished out of Ilwaco a few times growing up in Seaside. graduated in 95'

For me the transition has more to do with not having the ability to advance based on hard work. Instead I have to take out more loans to get another degree in administration meanwhile I have more experience than the administrators at administering. You have career educators making multimillion dollar decisions with no experience even reading a budget.

That is what frustrates me. I look at how hard I work versus my buddies from college and realize I can make more, work less, and have a better quality of life if I leave.

If you are going out, shoot me a pm and I would love to go with you. My boat is not ocean bound. We stick to the CR out of st helens and Lake merwin.

Here are my

I have an engineering degree and work in that "great" corporate life for over 15 years now. It is not all it is cracked up to be. I would look to get to a better district if I was you. To me I would trade an extra 20-30K a year to do something I love. If you do not like to teach than I would say go do something you like. Just remember the grass is not always greener on the other side.

My dad started his career out teaching and left it after 4 short years to go make the big bucks. Well, he never made the "big bucks" instead he left a steady rewarding job and ended up with no retirement when all his teaching friends are now retiring he is still trying to make ends meat. I think he regrets leaving when he did for instant gratification.

Just my perspective, hopefully you will find something that works for you.

After college I spent 4 years in the corporate world and the company I worked for went under. I wanted to coach and teach so I tried it.

After being in Education I am one of the people that will never voate for an education funding measure because of the constant waste that takes place.

I know that in the corporate world there are no guarantees but, you are able to be rewarded based on what you do. You are able to have the opportunity to be promoted. If I ever want to make more than $60,000/year I will have to go take out more loans to get an administrative endorsement. That isn't worth it to me especially when I know that I can do a better job now than they are.

Thanks for the support. See you on the river. this spring I will be the blue bayliner with a fish on.

Personally, I'd rather be in the trenches of teaching.........
I hate the game-playing and red tape.........I hate the meetings.......I hate the constant change.......I hate the paperwork..........
But......I love the kids........and the challenge of teaching them.

I guess I am still at a place in my life where making $32k a year to do something I love is well worth it. I belive, and this isnt an exageration, that getting to be a teacher is like winning the job lottery.

I know I must be having an impact when a parent tellls me, "you know, if it werent for you, my kids year would have been a total bust"

I know I must be doing something right when my old students see me and beg me to come back or to sub for their class.......its a good feeling.......

Im there for the kids........and when all the politics and BS start flying, I just shut my door and teach............its a beautiful thing...........
