I will save about 2 dozen heads from my plug cuts when I head out. These get brined, just like the rest of the bait. I have run out of plug cuts before and switched to flashers and hoochies. I put a head on the top hook and troll away. The herring tipped flasher got twice as many bites, when all gear and depth were the same.

Keep your bait in a 1 gallon container, and you won't step on it.

dogfish, what do you brine your bait in?? The head and hoochie sounds like a good idea.

This year I took recycling bait to a new extreme. We were fishing at buoy 10 last
Saturday and landed a number of silvers. When we cleaned them one fish was just loaded
with needle fish. Most of these needle fish were ~ 4" long but one was 6" long and in
pristine shape so I threw it in the brine bucket with the herring. The next day four of us head to the ocean and burn through almost 2 doz. herring and one bag of anchovies before we head to buoy 10 to look for more fish. We start catching fish and burn through yesterday's old herring. I'm short one fish and the only thing left is this 6" candlefish. So I take this bait that's about the size of a thin pencil and put a 6/0 hook in the tail, a 5/0 hook in the side and a small hook in the nose. (At this point I'm just laughing because it looks like it is all hooks.) Put a little bend in the body and down it goes 15 pulls. Less than 5 minutes later fish in the boat. Anybody know where you can buy needlefish????
