Cleaning your rifle. Q??
When I was in the Navy, in the delta, special forces used WD40 to clean there automatic weapons, we used the same on the 40 & 50's.
I thinking on using it to clean the new rifle, the hoppie stuff stinks up the place to much for the wife.
What do you all think, on this use????

Re: Cleaning your rifle. Q??
I don't use wd40. I use a product called Ezzox. Before I'd use Wd40, I'd use break Free.
If it is a new rifle I shoot 5 rounds very slowly at the end of 5 I clean it with Sweets 762 till the patch has no more blue on it. Than dry clean it with break cleaner followed by a light patch with ezzox, than a dry patch - repeat four more times - you should noticed with each batch of 5 there will be less and less copper.
Another very good product is shooters choice

Re: Cleaning your rifle. Q??
I personally would never ever use WD40 on a rifle, especially a new one, unless it was my last resort. The compounds that make up WD40 actually will cause some corrosion over time believe it or not. I've seen it do it on more then a few guns. StickFish's recommendation on the Ezzox is a good one, although I've not used it, I hear that it's a wonderful product. I stick with the old tried and true Hoppe's #9 solvent. True it can stink up the place and sure my wife complains as well , but it does the job every time! I also use a Bore Snake for my rifle. It has a ten times more surface area then just using a rod and a patch. Use a little solvent and the snake and run it through twice and you are golden my friend.
Of course I tend to be a little over the top sometimes and I'll finish it off with the standard rod-n-patch just to be 100% sure of it ya know. Thanks and good luck to you.

Re: Cleaning your rifle. Q??
one thing to be aware of(someone correct me if I'm wrong) but I believe that wd-40 will take all grease off, so your gun will be more prone to rust. I would not use it, but if you do make sure to wipe down with some sort of rust preventative.
I use sweets for bore cleaning, but not often. I have read from some very good long range gun builders and they have seen damage to barrels from letting sweets stay in the barrel to long. so careful with the real aggressive stuff.
I heard that hoppe's was coming out with some scent free stuff, might be worth a look. I use a lot of shooters choice also. for bore cleaning take a look at tetra gun, powerful stuff but not as damaging as sweets can be.
have fun, there are a ton of good products out there, stick with some of the more popular ones and you can't go wrong. as far as the wife goes, good luck. I deal with the finger nail polish smell, and she deals with my solvents.

CLP over WD any day.... The smell gets everwhere when I clean at home, that's why I clean at the range or in the field.

Another bad thing about WD-40 is if you use on your action it has a tendency to goop up or thicken in cold weather making your action sticky and shells wont eject or will jam.Ive even had the trigger not work because of freezing WD-40.

Re: Cleaning your rifle. Q??
Probably not an issue to use WD-40 in the proximity of loaded ammunition, but the stuff will deactivate unseated primers.

Re: Cleaning your rifle. Q??
Here is another neat Jarret trick. Clean and lube your trigger mechanism with Ronson lighter fuel. Acts as a desiccant, solvent (old lube) and leaves a nice protective film that doesn't interfere with the trigger. Rinse the gunk out, repeat, let it dry

Re: Cleaning your rifle. Q??
Sit back, crack a cold one and watch it bubble bore cleaning method.
A six volt lantern battery with two wire leads, a steel rod from the hardware store (sanded to remove any plating), rubber chamber plug and a 50/50 mix of household ammonia and water.
-Plug the chamber.
-Fill barrel with the ammonia solution.
-Build up some insulators on the lower and upper end of the rod with electrical tape so the rod stays centered along the bore axis and will not come in contact with bore metal.
-Insert the rod into the bore.
-Run a wire lead from the rod to the negative terminal on the lantern battery.
-Run the other wire lead from the outside of the barrel metal to the positive terminal.
-After about 5 minutes of bubbling pull the rod and sand off the black muck that was drawn to the rod by electrolysis.
-Repeat until the rod no longer attracts black muck.
-Oil the bore and finish the cold one.
This process removes copper fouling like nobody’s business. It is cheap and requires no brushing and therefore lends itself to keeping that muzzle crown true.

Eezox Link
Midway has Eezox Link
Here's a link to an article on rust prevention in firearms I found. It leans towards being a promo for Eezox but an interesting test none the less.
