Default Chestnuts!

Anyone else here a chestnut fiend? It's one of my favorite things about the approaching holiday season.

This year, instead of waiting for them to show up in stores, my wife and I went down to a orchard south of Sherwood and bought 10 pounds about a week and a half back, and we are about half through with them!

Usually from the store, they are dried out and about 1/4 are moldy. These are perfect. Full, moist, no mold.

Great stuff for sure!

Sorry, can't type today. Never had chestnuts. Do you eat them raw or need to roast them first?

If you take a walk on NE 21st Ave. between Fremont and Broadway you have to wear a hardhat because of all the falling chestnuts. Which reminds me of a joke about a parrot named Chet. But that's one for in the boat.

They definitely need to be cooked. You know the song, right, Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...Jack frost nipping at your nose...

You can boil or steam them, oven roast, or do the open fire thing. They are kind of a pain to peel, but to me, it's worth it and they are great in a number of fall recipes. My favorite is the stuffing my wife uses in the turkey.

I used to get them from street vendors growing up in Chicago when my parents would take us downtown to look at the Christmas displays on State Street. You would be freezing, and you would get a paper bag full of them. They were too hot to touch, but there was a moment where you could just barely handle them enough to peel them and get em into your mouth where I think they were about the best thing I have ever had. It's funny how good memories are a big part of what food you think is good.

This is sounding better by the moment. They also sound like they could be kind of addictive. Kurt you want to share the name of your dealer where you picked up your 10 pounds?
