Default OT: and you thought your job was bad.

Last sunday morning driving through Tillamook westbound on HWY 6 on my way to the bay.

wife: that manure pile looks like it's smoking.

me: why yes it does, but I'll bet it's just steam, it's kinda cool out today.

Later that day on the way back through I see two poor fire fighters wading through and hosing down a very large burning manure pile.I'm not sure who those poor guys were, but if any of you meet up with them, buy'em a round on me. Some jobs just can't pay enough.

I am pretty sure the smoking the pile you saw was a semi load of straw that was burning. A real good friend of mine had 2 of his semi's burn to the ground last Friday when parked side by side. They were both loaded with straw that had not been delivered yet. This guy owns several trucks and his business is to haul hay and straw to farmers. He now has 2 less truck and a couple unemployed drivers.

Just before the fire broke out, it is reported that a couple kids were seen running from where the trucks were parked. It is not determined what has happened yet, but it looks like arson is a possibility. I guess the fireman made them dump the straw and spread it out, so they could dig thru it ?? Not sure what they were looking for?

Sorry about your friend, that sucks . This fire was the manure pile ( I could tell it wasn't straw) on the north side of 6 right before the RR bridge.

BOE, they probably spreading everything out to make sure they had the fire out. Thos etypes of fires can be dificult to get into the middle of to make sure all the fire is out. Can be a messy job.

Manure can burn if it's a big enough pile. As it decomposes it creates heat, if that heat gets up to whatever the flashpoint is for wet stinky manure, you're gonna have some unhappy firefighters.
Straw and hay fires are pretty common, especially if it gets put in wet.

BOE,

I wonder if those are the same kids that set loose all the boats in T-Bay on the outgoing tide thinking that they would look cool out on the water without anybody in them

Lots of folks lost their boats that day.

Was your friend insured?
