the largest salmon on record
This was from an article quoted on another post about the 99 lb salmon caught up north.
I am having alittle trouble with this formula
"The monster fish with a length of 53.5 inches and a girth of 38.5 using a formula (endorsed by FOC) of Length x Girth squared divided by 800 would weigh 99.125-pounds"
53.5 x 38.5= 2059.75
that squared is 4242570.0625
divided by 800 is 5303.212578125
Does anyone else know of what this formulas is really suppose to be or am I just pushing the wrong buttons?

Re: the largest salmon on record
(Length x (Girth)^2)/800 = pounds

Re: the largest salmon on record
T2F,
Only Girth is squared, not the product of Length and Girth. W=[(L*(G^2))/800]

Re: the largest salmon on record
You were close, the formula is
Length x (Girth)^2 / 800, you square the Girth, then times that by the length and divide by 800...

Re: the largest salmon on record
Or maybe this will help you see it:
Girth squared, (38.5x38.5) 1482.25
times length 53.5 x 1482.25 = 79300.375
Divided by 800
79300.375 / 800 = 99.12546875 pounds give or take a lil'
Hope this helps. It's an operation thing...

Re: the largest salmon on record
Now the real question is...is that formula based on nice fat fish in the ocean and estuary, or skinny, non-feeding fish that are about to spawn?

Re: the largest salmon on record
Considering you are taking the girdth of the fish, I would guess that the gluttony of the fish has been taken into account.

Re: the largest salmon on record
Let's see if this works for humans I am 6'-1" and 34" girth @ 190 lbs.
So 72*(34^2)/800=104lbs
I guess fish are skinner at the top and bottom
